Rivet is fine, your captain doesn't always need to be your best player during the game.

If the players want him as captain he's captain.

Your captain should be your leader.

That being said, Grier's a good choice. He's not hard to notice, and, well, he's black.

I know the players want Rivet and it makes it a hard decision. He was injured last season so that the excuse we're given as to why he was non-existent on the ice. I don't buy it hook line and sinker but whatevs. I hope if he gets it he'll be more effective as an on ice leader instead of just a locker room guy. Personally I want Vanek to get it though I know that view isn't shared by many here.

Although Rivet was less effective with one arm, I wouldn't say he was non-existent...

Even with one wing straight-jacketed to his chest he was still throwing checks - imagine how painful that must have been... And every one of his teammates knows what he went through - Thats Grit Baby!!!

Rivet is the toughest SOB on the team, there is no question who El Capitano should be -

C - Rivet
A - Grier (C if Rivet isn't ready at the start of the season)
A - Pominville
A - Gaustad

Regardless of what any of us think, Rivet in the player's minds, deserves to be the captain and that's good enough for me.

If I had to choose a captain that wasn't the one the player's picked, it'd be Grier. He blocked a slap shot with his ear. That's all I needed to see..

I remember Rivet blasting Pominville in the back with the puck after he dicked around on a prime scoring chance. I thought it was very captainly.

seeing how vanek is our primary scoring threat i do not think he would do well with the added pressure of being captain. i too thought of mentioning his name as an assistant captain but then i wondered if the added pressure would hurt his production.

I think the question should be "Who should be captain AFTER this season?" Rivet will be a FA and I'm not sure the Sabres will resign him. (They might do a year long contract based on his play this year, but that remains to be seen)

Of course in that Ottawa game, the Sens had nothing to gain (which is why they didn't play their Sabre-killer goalie) and the team was preoccupied trying to constantly feed Alfie, 'cause it was Alfie Day!

SO no, he really doesn't "take over" games.

As far as who should be captain:
Generally you expect that the captain will be the go-to guy. You expect the captain to be a team cornerstone for not only talent, but emotion. Rivet clearly does not fit that bill....at all.

However, there are some other teams around the league where the guy they chose as captain is a bit of a mystery.

My ultimate conclusion?
As is often the case, the players know something the fans don't, which is why they vote for who's captain, not Jack & Joe Blow in Sec 320 Row 5.

Scoring 4 goals isn't exactly a common thing, it's not like it's a pickup street hockey game. He took that game over. Am I saying he should be given the C, probably not. However, when he's healthy, Vanek is a beast. Consider he had a bunch of nagging injuries during the year that he never talked about. That's probably why he didn't have a lot of games like the Ottawa game. When you play like he does, it's really difficult to play through an injury. I really don't understand how people can still hate on Vanek.

I don't "hate on Vanek", as you put it. I actually like him a lot. I just don't think he is:
A) as much a beast as you claim, and
B) worth the price tag

Thanks again, Edmonton!

If it wasn't for the Briere/Drury debacle, Vanek would be the best Oiler.

If it wasn't for that offer sheet Vanek wouldn't be making that much money.

Stop blaming Vanek for signing that deal, you easily would have done the same thing, especially that young of an age too.

Lowe knew it would be matched but he did it anyway, there was no reason to try and pry him away form Buffalo because he wasn't going anywhere, and I doubt Lowe would have done that had Drury and Briere not left town.
