Greg Easterbrook strikes again:

Quote:
A Mosque Near Ground Zero Seems Respectful by Comparison: What's the right way to commemorate 9/11? Hard to say -- for the wrong way, see the advertising in the Saturday edition of The New York Times. A day to remember and reflect -- Tiffany & Co. WE pause to remember -- Lord & Taylor's. We remember those we lost -- Brooks Brothers. In remembrance -- Chanel. In memoriam -- Bloomingdale's.

Most of Manhattan's high-end retailers purchased stomach-turning 9/11 commemoration ads in New York's primary newspaper on the ninth anniversary of the day. Expensive stores exploiting the memory of a tragedy to help them market jewels, silk ties and handbags. Sure, New York merchandisers will stoop to anything for money, but this went beyond the pale. And if it was "a day to remember and reflect," how come Tiffany's flagship Fifth Avenue store was open? Worst: On this ninth anniversary, Gucci remembers.

Basically that was the message given to Americans by Bush and Giuliani in the aftermath.

America: "What can we do to help?"

W. and Rudy: "Go shopping, eat at your favorite restaurant, take a plane somewhere, maybe New York!"

Reminds me of something in a round about way. My wife and I went to Belgium for my birthday about seven or eight years ago and stayed with this family that had a spare room and rented it out to travelers. After a day of seeing the town we had dinner with them and at one point they were wondering why Americans were now calling "French fries", "Freedom fries". (They were also joking about how French fries were actually from Belgium in the first place so it really made no sense). Anyhow, the point I'm getting at is that reactions to real adult problems in this world seem more and more childlike to me as I get older. French leaders don't support an invasion of Iraq so we re-name food.......fuck me. Terrorists bomb us and we bastardize 1.6 billion people yet let oily little execs profit from the deaths of Americans under the guise of patriotism. Maybe I'm just being cynical but fucking hell.

Buying stuff can help stimulate the economy. That's why when there were rumors of a potential recession, people stopped spending money and made the recession skyrocket.

im reading about the lehman brothers bankruptcy as we speak, which actually accelerated the recession ten-fold. it happened 2 years ago today.

my brother in law worked for them at the time. he said his team had the option to stay on, but the whole team went into his bosses office at once, and they didnt need to say a word. she knew they all had quit, which promptly meant she was unemployed at the end of that day.

i love when capitalism destroys the human spirit, but i hate that it is considered in bad taste to say "i told you so".

Meanwhile the Cuban state is firing 10% of their population (~500,000) because communism is thriving and the workers have conquered all!

i never stated that i feel communism is a viable option to capitalism. i have little faith in humanity collectively as well as privately, because the array of our perspectives on things insures that someone will always be miserable or poor. however, i do feel that those who experience fortune only seek it out further, usually at the expense of those who lack.

attacking the failures of an authoritarian communist state as a response to the shortcomings of capitalism really doesn't do much for me.

Right.
Humans are selfish and greedy.
That's not a bad thing.
Neither is inequality. It's a fact of life, not a crime.

What the fuck does any of this shit have to do with the mosque?

Make a new thread for...whatever point it is you're trying to make.

that's correct. suffering is necessary, but it doesn't stop me from resenting it at times. i can accept it, recognize the need for it, and resent it at the same time.

i'm an idealist and a romantic, not because of my recognition of these things, but because i admit their necessity while yearning for (perhaps visualizing) answers or resolutions to them.

Looks to me like this thing has been off-topic for almost a week.

it branched off of the discussion of the mosque, as a lot of other comments in various other threads do.

since you're so irritated by this, then you can make the thread, title it however you wish to, and then force me to post in it. or you can take a simpler route by ignoring me.

I'm a mod. I don't have the luxury of ignoring people.

Don't tell me to do that again.

i know you are a mod, that's why i suggested using your power to coerce me into using a new thread. i see you chose another option.

you obviously don't like being told what to do either, do you?

You were asked to keep the topic of conversation relevant to the thread, and move the off-topic discussion elsewhere. That's in the site rules.

You don't like it? Take it up with the other mods. Don't get all pissy about it and get tell ME to start a thread for you.

I swear that you get off by trying to be difficult.

I get off with a moist towel and pictures of Arab women (just to stay on topic  )
