If you all got Center Ice on the Dish Network, you could still probably watch many, if not most of the games by watching the other teams' broadcasts, assuming they're not playing the Devils, Rangers, or Islanders who also use MSG. I found last year that Center Ice very often offered both broadcasts of a lot of games.

Well that's also assuming the people in charge of the blackout rules are seriously not paying attention.

Yup, here in Colorado I haven't seen an Av's game on Center Ice. Always blacked out regardless of which feed they are showing.

What I'm assuming here is that it's a blackout of the channel, not the Sabres. I could be wrong.

Yeah DF, that's what I'm going off of too...Kings and Ducks games are always blacked out on center ice here regardless of the feed.

So what exactly are the blackout rules? And why do they even apply for?

The blackout rules on center ice are to protect the ad revenue of in-market broadcasters (MSG in this case) and nothing else.

It's not like football.

Here goes the finger pointing game. I emailed dish network asking them when an agreement will be in place, telling them that if they haven't made a deal with MSG by October 5th, that I'd be canceling my service. This is what they came back with:

Quote:
Dear Valued DISH Network Customer,

We regret that MSG Networks, the owner MSG and MSG Plus, removed their channels because DISH Network would not agree to an outrageous contract demands, including a double-digit rate increase.

We understand these channels are important to you and we are pursuing every avenue possible to restore them as quickly as possible. DISH Network has submitted a request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for help regulating the terms that programmers, like MSG Networks, are able to demand.

Please help us by calling MSG Networks at: 212-465-6741 then press 0. Tell MSG Networks to negotiate in good faith with DISH Network and to restore these channels to our line-up.

Sincerely,
DISH Network

Oh, so it's not like if the game doesn't sell out then it's not on TV then.

Pfffttt... FiOS submitted a complaint to the FCC regarding MSG withholding their HD channel over a year ago, and the FCC ruled in FiOS's favor. Yet have they done anything to enforce the ruling? Nope. So I still don't have the Sabres in HD.

This situation is a little different, because DISH is now without the channel entirely, whereas FiOS just doesn't have the HD channel, so maybe things will get resolved. But who knows. I'm still pissed off at this whole MSG/FiOS shit. I just hate MSG so much.

Yeah, nothing like that.
It's just to force people to watch the local feed if available.

How surprising that MSG has quite the opposite point of view :)
Hard to tell which company is screwing up here, but I'm kind of relieved that stupid providers are not an local Austrian phenomenon.

Quote:
“We are disappointed with DISH’s decision to drop MSG Networks. DISH has rejected numerous fair and reasonable proposals at rates, terms and conditions consistent with our deals with other operators. Instead of negotiating for a new agreement, DISH has decided to deprive their customers of our award-winning networks and their favorite sports teams,” said Dan Ronayne, executive vice president and general manager, MSG Networks. “We call on DISH to come to the negotiating table and reconsider our good faith proposals. We encourage DISH subscribers to call 1-877-616-4MSG or visit www.iwantmsg.com for more information, including a list of other providers in their area that carry MSG and MSG Plus.

My parents will get games broadcasted near Albany while people in Buffalo won't.

Awesome.

Well each company is going to blame the other company, it's just how business works.

I actually just bought my Center ice service for this year yesterday. I'm not trying to rub it in here, though it's probably going to come off that way. Just another reason I love living in Portland. Anyone who wants to come out here, drop my a line, I'll tell you where to go. No snow, except in the mountains where you'd actually enjoy it. Best beer in the country, music scene that's way better than it should be for a mid-size city, bike lanes and public transportation everywhere, and no Sabres blackout.

I am petitioning for the Sabres to get their own channel like the Yankees and Leafs... i think even the Pittsburgh Pirates have their own damn channel. It would get the ratings but most likely is a pipe dream of mine that will never happen due to money constraints

You have the highest number of breweries per-capita, but according to the GABF and the world beer cup results California has the best beer.

I lived out there for four years and have to say that Oregon beer is fucking wonderful. I've been spoiled, stationed in Washington, Germany and Colorado....great beer the whole journey.
