I had this discussion with some coworkers after reading a news story last week. What do you guys think? Basically, if an immigrant (green card, visa, etc) is charged with and is convicted of a felony, the standing policy is to have them serve their term, and then deport them.

Personally, I'd rather just say "Here. Get out of jail free. Get out of my country."

Honestly, that policy is not exactly correct anymore. If it's not a violent felony (rape, murder, etc) then ICE will not touch them (or delay it so long that it's not worth it). They do their time and then hit the mean streets here in the good ole USA. Look at that case out of Prince William Co where the guy killed the nun driving drunk. He was slated for deportation (on two previous DWI's) but ICE was dragging their feet.

Along with about 240,000 cases.....

Carlos A. Martinelly-Montano, 23, who entered the United States illegally at age 8 with his parents and sister, has been awaiting a deportation hearing after two convictions for drunken driving in 2007 and 2008. His case has been postponed three times -- and it is one of about 243,000 cases that are clogging immigration courts, according to statistics compiled by Syracuse University.

Because of the backlog, it takes 15 months to conclude the average case. Martinelly-Montano's has dragged on for nearly two years.

If they're going to be deported (or SUPPOSED to be deported afterwards) why would we want to foot the bill for their incarceration first? GTFO.

Of course, being a bleeding heart liberal I THINK i'm supposed to say "just release them on their own recognizance, give them tax breaks and vouchers to 'get back on their feet' and throw in some free healthcare and schooling so their children arent as bad off as they were. But really....just GTFO.

I see your "it's never going to change" point of view. I wasn't asking your opinion on whether or not it's going to change though ;)

Directly deporting them would be a gift since they'll simply walk back over the border again.
They should do their time.

Knock them out, and implant exploding chips in their brains.

Very good points, I voted GTFO, but seeing how they will just walk back over and still be free, deport them to Antarctica or something, get them a long ways away from the USA.

Do the time, because as stated above, they can just come back. But...shouldn't regular American prisons only be for American citizens and legal aliens? So how about putting the illegals in Guantanomo? And if they don't behave there, they could get an upgrade to Abu Graib! Then when they complete their time, just kick them out the front gates. Welcome to Cuba or Iraq!

I would be in favour of jail time, and let em stay in our country

If we kick them out, then theyll just come right back over

Really? Are we that complacent and downtrodden as a society? We have the highest prison population in the WORLD. That's pretty ridiculous.

You guys make it so easy to cross over the border.

"YEAH they'll just do it again no big deal"

Here is a hypothetical question

Instead of the choices above, why not give the death penalty for all felonies by immigrants

Because the entire process for enacting the death penalty costs more money than it does to put someone in prison for life.

Not the mention the ethical issues behind sentencing someone to death when their crime could be nowhere near warranting such a punishment.

It costs approx 20k/year to incarcerate an inmate. (click for reference). That's anywhere from 800k-1.2mil.

A death penalty trial can easily cost that.

Not to mention the cost behind actually following through with the execution.

Well we could always revert to Firing Squads like out in Texas and some other state? hahaa

Pick a group of people. have them all aim for the heart, out of the 8 people, two actually get bullets, the rest are blanks, and then boom problem solved.
