Meh, it's not space. Cool, but not space - they're only 1/3 of the way there.

People do this all the time - although not father and son teams usually. A lot of students have done it. Two MIT students did it last fall. I know some people at U of A working on a fairly involved one right now.

Another interesting thing is the "rockoon" - rocket launched from a balloon. Have a fairly decent sized rocket on there - figure you can ignite it at 18,000 feet or so then launch it another 15,000...pretty cool.

Yeah...upper atmosphere != space, but still cool.
I recall someone from the UK did a similar experiment a few months ago and was contacted by NASA after posting his pictures online.

A few University of Arizona students just launched one of these this weekend. They got absolutely fantastic pictures - better than ones I've ever seen. Not the first time they've done it either, and they're planning to do it again in the spring.
