Has a Nobel winner ever declined to accept?

But Obama picked up the phone at 3 am! It was Biden, asking him if he was allowed to speak to the media yet or if he was still in time out.

I think Biden is going to be in Cheney's bunker for a long long time.

Perhaps Obama should redistribute the wealth. Give the award and money to the poor.

If I had the money I'd spend it on converting my car into the batmobile. I really hope Obama makes the right decision and does this to his car. OR has airforce one converted into the... nevermind.......... 1.4 million isn't going to cover the costs.

Newspeak Magazine is reporting that, according to the Ministry of Truth, President Obama's doubleplusgood record made him the goodfullest selection for the Nobel prize.

Well he shouldn't take the blood stained money anyway...
Nobel, much like Winchester's wife was just guilt ridden for unleashing such destruction on the planet ;)

For the curious; Here's the list of people that were less worthy than Obama for the Nobel peace prize:

Sima Samar, women’s rights activist in Afghanistan: “With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women’s Affairs.”

Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.

Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence.

Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: “These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon.”

Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for ‘inciting subversion of state power.’

Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China’s communist system. He now lives in the United States.

Sure those people who didn't win would have been given international attention to further their causes. BUT! The President of the United States needs more attention. No one ever pays attention to the US. We're the wall floors at the school dance. :( I hear at the UN our ambassadors sat alone for the last 4 years :( Even the British ambassadors wouldn't make room for us to sit down.

People, people, people...the reason is clear, and obvious. I mean, how many of those persons listed put the verbal smackdown on Kanye West? Exactly. Obama was the perfect recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

at the risk of sounding like a d-bag here but i dont see how 3 of those people would make better recipients then obama. Jia, Junsheng, and Betancourt (from your discription) were just jailed by their uptight government for saying it sucks. what did they do beyond that that would warrant the Nobel Peace Prize?

Now, Mukwege and the HIaCMC, those are people worthy of winning.

Sima Samar is also way more worthy.... I have a six month old kitten that has done more for world peace than Obama, as well.

Why criticize President Obama for being selected for the Nobel Peace Prize?

Obama didn't pick himself for the prize and said, "I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize."

He is giving all of the $1.4 million in prize money to charity.

If there is one thing Cross' list points out is that the competition was not as strong as it has been in years past. I also have no doubt that the Nobel committee was sending a message about what they would like to see done to help further peace in the world. After all, that is what this privately funded prize was created to do - further the cause of peace. They can spend their money anyway they want to help bring about that end.

I can think of far worse investments toward that goal than to bet on this president.

I didn't.
I'm criticizing what a joke the prize has become.

What has Al Gore done to further world peace?
How about Yasir Arafat?

Yep...just about as much as Obama.
Are you implying he actually deserves it?

His statement about not being worthy is spot on, and he shouldn't accept it.

And you know what? Most of the world agrees with me.

EDIT: look, it makes so little sense, Time magazine (the magazine with a full blown love affair with Obama) is mocking it..
