not the first time.

the Italian police made mistakes , too.

finally the game couldn't be played. UEFA ---> (I guess) Italy gets the win 3:0 (as usual) , Italia gets a fine (they were responsible for Safety)

I don't think Italy will get the win. They had a bad safety concept and a short-handed police, just as usual.
I guess they will (re)play it as a ghost game, without an audience.

How can security let fans bring pocket knives and road flares into a stadium like that?

Well, you can't catch everything because these guys are very tricky when it comes to smuggling things into a stadium, but Italy screwed up big time. Everybody knew this game will be a security nightmare and they just did nothing and let everbody with everything in who wasn't arrested prior to the game.

Is there a history of bad blood between Italy and Serbia?

When I was in Italy and went to events it was either hyper-security and they did everything short of a cavity search or they didn't give a fuck.

They don't like each other but this wasn't really about Italy. This was a planned act by hooligans and the real target were their own team. Serbia sucked lately and they didn't want the game to start.
Serbias goalie was attacked a day before the game by hooligans, probably because he plays for Partizan Belgrad now and used to play for Roter Stern Belgrad. Both clubs have large hooligan groups and hate each other.
So, it wasn't really about the game (hooligans don't really care for the outcome of games, they aren't fans).

The [Serbia] players have been assaulted by their own fans in their bus.

"Their goalkeeper [Vladimir Stojkovic] was in our changing room, he was trembling and had fear - not only about tonight but also in view of returning home.

"The ultra fans seemed organised. It appeared as though they would have done everything possible to make sure the game was not played. According to the Serbian players, that was their aim."

Seems crazy to me to attend a sporting event strictly to pillage and destroy, but I guess that's why I don't do such things. :)

Another theory I just read about. Some politicans think it was a planned act in order to harm Serbia's image by people who don't want Serbia to join the European Union....but that's just pure speculation.

Anyhow, Serbia screwed up because they let them travel in the first place and Italy screwed up because they let them get into the stadium.
