I think Lalime and the team in front of him are both equally to blame. We outshot Chicago 41-21. 4 goals on 21 shots isn't great. But Lalime isn't great. He's a backup goalie. You would have liked to have seen him stop one or two of the goals he allowed, but the Sabres seem to always find a way to let games slip through their fingers.

It was a hard fought game, and I thought that the Sabres looked a lot better, but towards the end they just didn't find a way to win like they did last year. It was a huge buzzkill when Chicago took the lead late in the third period... But then the Sabres pissed away a 5-on-3 with some bonehead penalty and then they didn't to jack shit on the 4-on-3.

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen Miller stop at least one of the two Hossa shots or the Kovalchuk shot, but you complained about me saying that. I don't understand how you can come back and basically say the same thing about Lalime and not admit bias.

Obviously the team thinks Enroth isn't NHL ready or they would have brought him up. Unfortunately we just have to deal with Lalime. He was fairly decent and made some good saves last night. No doubt, he is past his prime and I'm a little disappointed they extended his contract for a year. It's only a year, I'm pretty confident in saying that we will see Enroth backing up Miller next season.

It's a phrase that basically means, if you wanna see the Sabres at the top, turn the rankings.

So it’s all on Lalime now.

I see.

Well, that just explains the last couple of games then, doesn't it? We lost because he was on the bench since the preseason, wasn't involved in the snooze fest against the Devils, the last game against the Hawks or the game the night before last against the Habs. Makes sense to me in a way, you know, considering he's a bad luck charm or something. Maybe he's a bad omen? Yep, let's blame him because it just makes sense.

Let me echo sabresalltheway; IT WASN'T LALIME'S FAULT. FOR FUCK SAKES. You could put Grant fucking Fuhr in the net last night or Hasek and if we lost, it'd be the same rants. Jesus christ I swear to fuck....

The last couple games, we sucked worse than a shop-vac in wood shop class. Period. Last night, the effort was there by some players, others did their best pylon impressions. We didn't get some lucky bounces, bottom line it just wasn't in the cards.
Edit: To blame the one guy who has been on the bench since the start of the season having no hand in the previous losses and who has no input when it comes to scoring goals for this team is ridiculous. Sure, his job is to stop the puck, but if you're not getting any help from the team in front of you either helping out in your end or scoring goals, it's pretty hard to win a game. Regardless if you're Miller or Lalime.

Miller? Why are you bringing up Miller? Really? Do you want to start this argument?

To give credit where credit is due, I am echoing a little bit the points made by Coziol on the postgame report after the Chicago game (where he said "you'd like Miller to stop one of those two Hossa shots") and I kind of agreed.

Yeah. He should have stopped the second one.

Oh, and I never admitted to not having a bias towards Miller. I told Phil that I am overprotective of him when he called me Schony, whatever the fuck that was supposed to mean. And don't get me started on the Kovalchuk shot. My point was that it was dumb of you to come down on Miller because he got beat by a perfect shot from Kovalchuk in overtime, after stopping 34 out of 35 shots while his team couldn't score a goal.

Enough with your snarky remarks about how you guys think I am too defensive over Miller. This isn't anything new. I responded in slesh's Montreal vs Buffalo thread about it but you must have overlooked it. You think I am the only person here who might have a bias towards a specific player? Fall back.

As others have alluded, Patty is a backup, no more, no less. The team needs to play above average hockey to win if he's in goal. The same can be said for most backup goalies in this league. Giving breakaways to Hossa, turning the puck over to Kane for a 2-on-1, and missing the net on point-blank feeds don't qualify as above average hockey. I think his W-L record reveals much more about the team in front of him than it does Patty himself.

I'm not the first guy to defend Lalime, but he played ok. If we can get that from him every night, I'll be completely fine with him.

Lalime is definitely a guy you like cheering for and you like seeing perform well.

Miller isn't responsible for defensive collapses.
