so I'm going to NYC in december for 2 days and need some help. do you guys think that it would be cheaper to drive there or take a bus? I was leaning towards bus but then thought, well when I get there, how am I going to get around? the hotel I'm looking to stay at is 10 miles away from where I'm going to be for most of my trip. normally 10 miles wouldn't bother me, but its going to be the middle of december, so I don't want to walk around so I'd prob hail a cab.

So I guess what I'm asking is which do you think would be better:

Driving there and having the car to get around

-or-

Taking the bus there and having to get around by cab

Thanks guys

Where are you going from? Personally I think the best bet is to park at a train station relatively close (I did Poughkeepsie) and take the train into Grand Central or Penn Station.

I know a lot of people don't like the cost of cab fare, but I didn't really mind. I probably spent around $50 total the weekend I was there.

DON'T drive in NYC. You can get wherever you want in NYC by foot or by subway. Taking a cab could be expensive, but that's always an option.

People in NYC and its surrounding areas drive like fucking morons, save yourself the time and trouble and leave your car home. Plus you will save money by not having to a pay a parking fee to keep your car at the hotel.

CV an fly have it right. New York is super easy to get around without a car. It's really just one less thing to worry about.

And yeah, NYC drivers are pants-on-head retarded...

For sure, fifteen seconds of riding in a cab will make you thankful you didn't bring your car, haha.

I took a cab from LaGuardia to Manhattan and I swear my cabbie ran at least 3 stop signs while telling me he couldn't understand how anyone would want to live in Canada. He said something to the effect, "Yeah, I was in Toronto once. I didn't bring my coat. Worst decision of my life."

I found riding in cabs to be one of the more entertaining parts of the trip, even though we didn't really need to do it all that often. Our hotel, The Grand Hyatt was right next to Grand Central Station, and also pretty close to the shopping district. I think the only cabs we took were to the Museum of Sex, the Met, Times Square, and back to the hotel from those locations.

When you're there, get 1 day fun passes. $8.25 per day, unlimited subway and bus rides for that day.

As was said, you do NOT want to drive.

When I go to NYC for a Sabres game at MSG, I'm going via Megabus. Thank you so much for posting that, Beth.

I wish we could have ridden in a cab when we went, but we did get to go on the Subway though, which sucked but was cool, just because I had a migraine on the subway.

Eh, i've driven around NYC before. It wasnt pleasant, and I agree the subway is the way to go...but it's not IMPOSSIBLE, you just have to act like a complete asshole who completely disregards the safety of everyone around you and you'll fit right in. :)
