Fragile Carey Price must be managed with care

"The kid is in a fragile stage of his career. Gainey did him no favours by running him out there night after night last spring when his confidence was clearly shot. Price should have been sent down to Hamilton to get his head together, especially because Jaroslav Halak had earned the job when Price was hurt.

If we are going to go through the same scenario this year, then Martin needs to act quickly, to protect his goalie, the future of this hockey team – and the sanity of Jerry and Lynda Price.

Better a young man working his problems out in Hamilton than a shattered boy in Montreal."

Seems we are now seeing an about-face, with regards to Price's perceived infallibility. He is now painted as a vulnerable young player; requiring "delicate handling" after repeated lapses and collapses, when faced with critical or high-pressure situations, over the past couple of seasons.

It's funny because it's sad.

A lesson in how NOT to bring along a young goaltender. Baby steps, baby steps, baby steps...

But, ETC, he's won at every level! He's the goalie of the future! He's the second coming!

Unfortunately, he's never been forced to acquire the mental toughness that comes from experiencing a body of "lesser failures".

He has been thrust (by a demanding organization, seeking to ride his short record of victory) into a position that offers little shelter or forgiveness...

They had hoped he could develop "on the fly", but the disappointments that had come with their unsuccessful "Centennial Season" and the lingering doubts that have been voiced in a handful of early games may force them to retrench, or risk dealing him a damaging set-back.

Should they "circle the wagons", or force him to "tough it out"?

The next few games will tell - But, the tone of this article sets the stage to give Gainey and the Habs an "out", without great loss of face in the eyes of their hypercritical fanbase and the jackals in the Montreal media.

And he's the next Patrick Roy!

I like Montreal's approach the first time around. If the kid can't swim well then put a 50 lb lead vest on him and drop him in the deep end of the pool. He'll learn real fast what it feels like to sink like a rock.

If you handle Price now like you should have in the first place it sends the wrong message. Which is "we were wrong." If you are a 19th Century organization on the fast track to the 21st millennium then you can never admit fault. You must pawn it off on those undeserving of it. Someone like Price will work perfectly. Take his potential and fully exploit it. I mean he has tremendous potential to be a fall guy. Get on this Montreal.

I wouldn't even be surprised if this seriously happened. Actually, I would expect it. It's kind of how a lot of things in this world operate. The media (biggest offenders), sports teams, politicians, even people every day in interpersonal situations.

It's too perfect.

That time of the month for Price. Give her a few days, she'll be fine.

Same with average forwards and d-men who are young ie Sam Gagner.

Hey Barasso's game fell apart early in his Sabres career, and he went down to Rochester to get his game back together.... The move worked well for him.

Every time I hear about a young goalie was rushed I think of Dan Blackburn.

Buried in Phoenix's AHL team.
