BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A judge handed down a creative and community-minded sentence to the owner of a popular Elmwood Avenue pizzeria convicted of tax fraud.

Rather than sending him to prison, State Supreme Court Justice Russell Buscalia ordered Joseph Jacobi to deliver 12 sheet pizzas to the City Mission, once a week for the next year.

Jacobi who owns Casa-Di-Pizza, pleaded guilty to grand larceny back in August for withholding more than $104,000 in state taxes.

I'd love to see more of this...Community oriented sentencing.
This is worth more than a fine 3x the size.

The fun thing is, even though he already paid $25K of the $104K he owed and he received that sentence, he STILL has to pay the rest of what he owes - the pizza deal was only to keep him out of prison.

Ehh, it's not surprising he has to pay everything he owes. The government wants their money and it wouldn't really be fair for them to dismiss him of the money he owes when legitimate taxpayers actually fulfill their obligation. I do like the twist to his "fine", though! :)

I sent this story to my tax teacher. I'm sure she'll enjoy it :D

Tonight, when the news said "Find out where he was sentenced to deliver free pizzas for a year next!", I half expected them to say the judge's house.

That's totally not the interesting part of the story.

I mean, yeah, it kinda is. But the uniqueness of it isn't where he's delivering to, but rather his sentence. I dunno.

It's still really cool, though. I legit expected from reading the headline initially that they meant he was supposed to deliver pizzas as his job. I was thinking, uhh big deal? at first

That's 624 total pizzas. That's a lot of pizzas.

I see on their web site that a sheet is 24 slices.

That's just shy of 15,000 slices of pizza.

How much does a pizza cost from him, so how much money is he losing on it?

From what I remember from my days of working in the bar, the cost to make was sheet pizza (minus labor costs associated) was about $3.25

So don't be a deadbeat and pay your taxes like everyone else is required to do? It's a fine being put to a good cause.
