With that in mind, the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, recommended that the U.S. Department of Agriculture stop participants of the federal Women, Infants and Children program, known as WIC, from buying potatoes with federal dollars. The institute also called for the USDA-backed school lunch program to limit use of potatoes.

Under an interim rule, the USDA agreed to bar WIC participants from buying potatoes with their federal dollars. Potatoes are the only vegetable not allowed. Next year, the agency will roll out a final rule on the WIC program, which last year served 9.3 million children and pregnant and breast-feeding women considered at risk for malnutrition.

The WIC program is a supplemental food program, and the determination was made that consumption of white potatoes was already adequate, said Christine Stencel, spokeswoman for the Institute of Medicine.

“The recommendation was made to encourage consumption of other fruits and vegetables,” she said.

The last time I checked potatoes were a staple, like rice or corn...they're packed with nutrition.
But don't worry citizen, the government is here to save you from yourself...and potatoes.

I'm curious to see what the theory behind it is. It may be because it's is full of starch which is a factor in obesity.

So is bread, and rice, and cereal, and pasta.

The WIC program is for women and children at risk of malnutrition during and after pregnancy...obesity isn't its main issue.

Being a military family and making a lot less than our civilian counterparts we have been on WIC for each of our children. I always thought it was funny that for all other fruits and veggies you had to buy fresh or canned stuff (all pretty healthy) but with potatoes you could get all kinds of shit like french fries and tater tots. I mean, a lot of people when given the choice between an apple and a plate of french fries would go for the grease and that's not what the program is for. That being said, why couldn't they have simply cut those unhealthy versions of the potato out and kept the regular raw ones on the list? I totally understand cutting out the less healthy foods but to clear cut the potato off the list completely? That's overkill.

It's discrimination against Irish and German Americans.

That or someone friggin hates Idaho.

Granted there are less than healthy preparations of potatoes, but the same can be said for damn near anything.

I guess families on WIC get enough potatoes without their assistance so this is the feds way of "diversifying" peoples fruits and vegetable consumption.

The exclusion of potatoes stems from a recommendation in a report from the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine. The recommendation was “made to encourage consumption of other fruits and vegetables,” according to Christine Stencel, a spokeswoman for the Institute of Medicine.

Stencel told CNSNews.com that the IOM was charged with bringing WIC packages in line with the latest dietary guidelines, which “all kind of say that we need to encourage greater varieties of fruit and vegetable consumption in this country.”

“White Potatoes are pretty widely consumed in America, so WIC participants are getting the benefits, the nutritional benefits that are in white potatoes,” Stencel said. “The recommendation about not using the WIC packages to purchase white potatoes is mainly to promote the purchase and consumption of a greater variety of fruits and vegetables.

Simply fucking ridiculous.
The Soup Nazi is now running the WIC and Federal FoodStamp program.

Next, they'll say you can't purchase pork or beef, only turkey, and not Sara Lee.
