Captain Vanek

After Craig Rivet's benching during tonight's Atlanta game, there has been some speculation over what happens with the captaincy. After all, it doesn't do your team any good if the guy with the 'C' is sitting on the bench. The following is merely me floating an idea. I'm not saying it's necessarily a good idea, nor do I profess to be intimately aware of the dynamics within the Sabres locker room.

Whew.

Are you ready? Wait, you probably already read the title. Shit.

Make Thomas Vanek the Captain. It's something that Brian Koziol brought up on the post-game report and something I've secretly been rolling around in my head for a while. The points Koziol made are good ones, and very similar to my own justifications.

Vanek has high standards. This is plainly obvious in the way he berates himself every time (every time) he misses a scoring chance. You want a captain with high standards because you want him to inspire the rest of the team to have high standards for themselves. Look, you don't win a cup by being a good team. You win a cup by having guys play above themselves in key moments, something the Sabres definitely need.

Vanek busts his ass. People can rag on him as much as they want, but the truth is that Thomas Vanek hustles and back checks with the best of them. I know that half the people reading this are going to start with the "with my own two eyes...!" bullshit. Look, I don't care what your anti-European and big-contract bias makes you see about Vanek. Dude hustles.

Vanek has shown the ability to rise to the occasion when given more responsibility. Every Sabres fan fondly remembers the start of the 2008-2009 season when Vanek was given penalty kill time and responded with several shorthanded opportunities (and a few goals to boot). (Yeah, this guy doesn't hustle.) Think back to last season when Vanek was coming off his injury late in the year. Four goals against Ottawa, one goal against New Jersey, a goal in Game one, an assist in Game two, and another goal in Game five. That's eight points in basically the five biggest games he played in that season.

If Rivet's benching becomes less an anomaly and more the norm, what do you have to lose? Wouldn't telling a guy who (supposedly) has confidence issues that the team believes that he can be the man do wonders for his game? The team is in 13th, but it only takes a small winning streak to get back into contention. We need to do something while that still holds true.

Give Vanek the 'C' and I think he will flourish.

I have a long track record of thinking Vanek would be a good captain and that the extra responsibility would make him a bettter player.

Roy and Vanek would make terrible captains.

Wasn't Pominville a good captain when we had that rotating captaincy crap? I don't remember...

Pominville was a badass captain during the rotating captaincy. That's why people wanted him as captain the summer they traded for Rivet.

Honestly, I think Vanek would flourish with the captaincy also, Pominville did too. Wasn't that the month he had a ridiculous amount of points too?

It was. He went on a Connolly-in-09/10 like tear with the C on his chest.

Rivet put himself in a bad situation and is facing its consequences.

If we have a new captain, the new guy should lead by example of things not to as Rivet has done.

Pominville was a rotating captain for the 2008 season, and could be a candidate for it permanently. It is a matter of returning swifty.

Vanek is in the same class as Crosby and Ovechkin, just older and behind them prodcutively. If he did more as required in past seasons, he would be captain material.

Vanek puts a lot of pressure on himself to succeed and has high standards of play. His high standards and work ethic would be a great reason to wear the C, but he's enough of a head case that if his confidence went to shit the added pressure would fry his brain.

I agree with Phil on this one. It is good that Vanek wants to play at the very best of his abilities and gives a crap when he doesn't by voicing how unimpressed he is with his own play. It shows he has high standards for himself. The downside of that is if he is to shoulder all of the downside of things with the team atm, he may become a cutter or something worse. I'd give him an A but I think Pominville would be a good selection, should the C be removed or given up by Rivet.

I think with Pominville, it goes the same about what people think about Vanek. I think that the extra responsibility would make him work harder year-round, and not just at the end of the season. I also think the team respects him as well as anybody on this team.

I always thought Pominville should be captain, and never really agreed with making Rivet the captain. Of course, since the team voted Rivet, I guess we should agree with those guys...

Rivet wouldn't comment on whether or not he would remain the Captain of this club.

As a side note, I can't believe these journalists have the balls to ask those kinds of questions. In my opinion, that's really pushing boundaries.

he just stood there and took it...

I never liked naming Rivet captain either. But if that's what the guys in the locker room thing, there's not a whole lot you can say against it. I would hope they would know better than I what should happen.

I still feel as though the locker room was young and immature when we brought him in; something along the lines of "let the old gritty vet lead us".

I can't count the number of times I've advocated Pominville as captain.

Am I the only one who doesnt like pommers as captain? He just seems to lack personality, drive, strength and grittiness. I dont HATE him as a player (anymore)...but I dont see him as captain material.

Not that we actually have a lot of captain material on this team...
