I've got a little network problem again. Nothing serious, but fucking annoying. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to networks, therefore I would appreciate any kind of help or advise.

Here's the problem:
I have a company laptop (Win 7, 64bit) which was set up by the company, therefore the user profile uses the company's domain. At home I have a little network with 2 network drives.
Whenver I was logged in in the company's network Win7 loses my network drives at home. I have to reconnect them every time. The company's network drives are always there, my drives only get lost after I was logged in in the company.
I guess the settings get renewed when I log inn(server based user profile), but there gotta be a way to save all my home settings. I thought Win7 would recognize the network settings during the boot process.

If it doesn't work automatically, is there a way to have 1 user with 2 network settings and to choose the right location on the log-in-screen?

I thought there's probably somebody who has a company laptop and a home network (network devices). If you do, please tell me how you do it.

When you connect your network drives at home, are you mapping them? If so, are you selecting 'Reconnect at logon' when you map them?

Hm; if you're logging on to your corporate domain every time you're logging in, you're using the same profile. It could be there's a script running when you log in to restore connection to mapped drives, but it may first clear all mapped drives. What you could do is create a batch file and put it in your startup directory to map your home drives every time you log in.

If I was admining a network that people took equipment home (shudder), I would do exactly this.

Well, that could be it. I guess I have to ask to the new admin. Unfortunately he has no clue what's going on and I will probably get a "Hm, I don't know, why do you even need it" again.

If there's really a script clearing all mapped drives, does it affect the offline files?

Yep, that's why I said it. It's either that or use an active directory script to map drives based on user and group memberships.

Say, for example, you've got a shared folder named 'MyStuff' on the computer whose IP address is 192.168.1.213. You could then open up notepad, and enter

net use Z: \\192.168.1.213\MyStuff


Go to file>save as> call it "MapDrives.bat", and make sure you select 'All Files'

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs." Right-click the "Startup" folder in the menu and select "Open All Users." This option opens the folder for all users on the computer. Choose "Explore" to open the folder for the currently logged-in user only.

Right-click the folder or file you want started when the computer boots. Select "Copy" from the menu.

Right-click any white space in the "Startup" folder you opened in Step 1. Select "Paste" from the menu list.

As a side note - during step 1 of the walkthrough, you'll probably only be able to right click and select 'Explore'. If you're able to select 'Open All Users', I'd like to speak with your CIO and HR, preferrably at the same time

Thanks. I already knew how to implement a startup batch files, thanks anyway. I just thought there might be a more elegant solution. I don't really like having to use batch files (I know I know, silly )

..and yes, I have admin rights ... long story. The admin treats the laptop as a company laptop but the agreement was that I can use it for all purposes because I'm not employed in the company and I have other work to do with it. Of course, nobody told the admin about it and now we're constantly fighting over the laptop.
I understand his point because it's officially the company's laptop, but I can't use it without all the rights.
I shouldn't have taken it in the first place, but I couldn't say no to this fine piece of technology
