I don't want to get pitch forked here but I haven't had to do anything like this for years so I guess I'm a bit behind. With my military ID, 9 times out of 10 I get to kind of skirt around the ball groping, ass cheek spreading side of the airport.

I don't have the data here at my finger tips but I remember reading several studies as to the effectiveness of new airport security and correct me if I'm wrong but haven't they essentially said that for the inconvienience and the discomfort factor we go through, there isn't a whole lot more terrorism being prevented. That may not be describing it well. What I mean is that terrorists will find a way through security messures....period. If you make grandma take off her shoes and then tell my dad he can't take his large bottle of Rogain on the plane, nothing is being accomplished other than a long as fuck wait (grandma is slow) and an embarassed and cranky dad.

On the other hand, the backscatter? machines (sounds like what I do to my toilet after chili) make it harder for someone to casually walk onto a plane with ill intent. Do I want my junk peered at with the Superman gaze? nope. So all in all it's a hard choice since I hate being treated like a criminal simply because I want to go home and watch a Sabres game but then again I hate being blown up by crazy religious fanatics.

Rather be blown up by religious fanatics then have someone spread my cheeks and fondle my balls.

The only thing better than crotchal is 'Federal Dick-Measurer'.

as nicely put in the article I just linked: If a terrorist makes it into an airport, it's already game over.
It's easy to get contraband through security (hell, I flew from Burbank to San Jose with a leatherman multi-tool with a 4" blade by accident).
Terrorism isn't stopped by a high school dropout at the airport, it's stopped in an FBI office.

Well then they need to change their search procedures because even cops can't get that friendly

That was a great article.

I was flying the day that the Buffalo Airport was going to make going through those full body scanners mandatory or else you have to get that intense pat down, but they didn't do either to me when I went through security. I just went through the regular metal detector without getting a pat down or anything. They didn't even mention the body scanner or ask me to go in one.

i concur

"Yes, resistance. Do you want to go into a private room?" he asked.

"Are you asking me into a private room?" I said. He looked confused. I said, "No, here is fine."

What is the security like when it comes to the checked luggage on planes? That concerns me more than what a person brings with them onboard a plane.

I think it's pretty good. Every time since 9/11 that I've flown, I've gotten the little card in my bag that says TSA was in it, and it was clearly gone through.

That's just my personal experience though.

Tom, if a picture of YOUR junk was posted on 4chan, and someone was actually able to identify it, wouldn't you feel the least bit of pride? C'mon...don't lie ;)

Really?? That's never happened to me before. Or I haven't noticed haha.

I've flown a bunch of times with checked bags almost full of beer...never gotten a note and that liquid could have been something much nastier.

They go through scanners that detect explosive substances; you've never seen a bag swabbed? Whenever I fly out of Wilmington, they open your carry-on, swab it, and run the swab through an analysis machine. It was kind of awkward when I flew to Buffalo with the same pack I carried ammo in... the machine went off almost before she pressed 'go'.

I usually don't fly with a lock on my luggage either. Could be why I get picked a lot for that.

(And yeah, I won't lie that if 4chan saw my junk, I'd be a little proud. :p )

Yeah, I've had the baggage slips, too. Even on locked luggage :)

Q. What can passengers expect to see at airports?
A. Passengers traveling to the U.S. from international destinations may notice enhanced security and screening measures throughout the passenger check-in and boarding process which could include explosives trace detection, use of advanced imaging technology, canine teams or pat downs, among other security measures to keep air travel safe.

Q. If a passenger does not wish to be screened using advanced imaging technology, do they have options?
A. This technology is optional to passengers in the U.S. Passengers who opt out of imaging technology screening will go through alternative screening, including same-gender pat downs. Passengers flying to the U.S. from international destinations should check with the country from which they are flying regarding that nation’s policies. For more information on use of advanced imaging technology in the U.S., visit www.tsa.gov.

Q. Will the majority of passengers still receive enhanced screening?
A. To more effectively mitigate evolving terrorist threats, the new security directive utilizes multiple, random layers of security, both seen and unseen, and all passengers may be subject to enhanced screening.

Here's some more:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/ ... _1049.shtm

Pat-Down Inspection

A pat-down inspection complements the hand-wand inspection. In order to ensure security, this inspection may include sensitive areas of the body. Security Officers are rigorously trained to maintain the highest levels of professionalism. You may request that your pat-down inspection be conducted in private.

And some more:

http://www.tsa.gov/approach/tech/ait/index.shtm

TSA began deploying state-of-the-art advanced imaging technology in 2007. This technology can detect a wide range of threats to transportation security in a matter of seconds to protect passengers and crews. Imaging technology is an integral part of TSA's effort to continually look for new technologies that help ensure travel remains safe and secure by staying ahead of evolving threats.

TSA uses two types of imaging technology, millimeter wave and backscatter. Currently, there are 385 imaging technology units at 68 airports.

In March 2010, TSA began deploying 450 advanced imaging technology units, which were purchased with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.

Advanced imaging technology screening is safe for all passengers, and the technology meets national health and safety standards. Learn more about the safety of AIT here.

TSA has implemented strict measures to protect passenger privacy, which is ensured through the anonymity of the image. Additionally, advanced imaging technology screening is optional to all passengers. Learn more about the privacy measures TSA has taken here.

Over the course of testing imaging technology, over 98 percent of passengers chose this technology over alternative screening procedures. Click here to see independent polling on AIT acceptance.

Additionally, passengers with joint replacements or other medical devices that would regularly alarm a metal detector often prefer this technology because it is quicker and less invasive than a pat down.

Seems like what you can expect is pretty well covered. So again, I ask, if one doesn't like these policies, then why is he/she entering the airports with the intention of flying?
