Pass or Fail: NHL legend LaFontaine's radical power-play idea

I like his idea, and would love to see it played around with at, say, the AHL level, at least.

So, what do you all think? Vote away after reading the linked story

Too many changes, too often. Nothing against Patty, or his idea - It just fucks with the the game stats, in yet another way.

It also encourages further breeding a "shootout specialist" - In the same way the "enforcer" was born of the instigator penalty; another one-dimensional player who gets inserted at critical junctures, but is unable to otherwise hold his own in a regular-game situation.

This becomes a pinch-hitter, designated-hitter, pinch-runner kind of scenario.

It will harm the game, in one more way. Please, just leave it all alone.

What is this supposed to help - Scoring? More scoring?? Higher powerplay scoring stats?

Sorry, I call "bullshit" on this.

I see it as anti-climactic, actually. How many times have we gone through the final seconds of the 3rd chewing on our fingernails while watching our boys on the PP (or PK)? The game in its final minutes are exciting enough. It's the other 55 minutes that you might want to fuck with.

Me personally, I'm pretty delighted the entire game; it's the players that make it boring.

LaFonataine was seriously hit too many times in the head, there are too many penalty shot in the NHL already and they are shootouts

FAIL.

This is pointless. If the team fails on the power play, chances are the game's going to a shootout anyways.

Automatic 6 breakaways.

Simple math, Patty.

Agree with what ice said . . . and with what Howie didn't say. :?

I've always detested the shootout, and remember when penalty shots were rare, and special, and therefore really exciting.

Fail...way too many holes. I would like to see the shootout changed, though, to a sudden death format. Home team shoots first, road team gets next two, and then alternate...first goal ends the game.

I don't like the penalty shot option, but I would consider the full-length PP for any penalty. There needs to be some way to make...force players to respect the rules.

The refs are told to keep games close so any penalty on one team is generally made up for later with a generous call or non-call for the other team. This prevents teams from being too afraid of a PK situation. With a full two minutes to kill every time, players would truly be afraid to be the goat that took a penalty that led to two or three goals against. The teams with better special teams would be rewarded more for that skill or effort. Refs could still call a roughly even amount of penalties to try to even the odds, but they can't control how many goals a team scores with those opportunities.

Ultimately, full-length penalties would do what refs and owners and CBAs can't do...it would force players to respect the rules, and therefore open up the ice and increase scoring chances for the most skilled players in the game.

BTW - back in the early days penalties were always served in full.

I actually like your idea of full lenght penalties, teams should pay taking penalties.

+1

Although this would bite us in the ass just as it would be to our advantage, I'm all for it....

the only thing i would want change with pp's is....

if a team in the lead takes a penalty with under 2 minutes to go.....then that penalty will extend the time in the 3rd period until the penalty runs out or a goal is scored

I like the full 2 minute pp, but not the penalty shot option. Maybe any penalty in the last 5 minutes or in OT could be an automatic penalty shot?

Two things I would like to see is are instead of just touching the puck on a delayed call, the team would have to control the puck AND clear the zone. Second, no line change after the initial score. Make it like an icing call with the 4 remaining players who were on the ice stay until they can safely make a change.

The power play score about 15-25 percent of the time (guestimating %) so is it really that much of an advantage? I would like to see it be a little higher like 30-40% of the time.
