Sorry for the bad song reference; anyways, those silly guys at Harvard have seemingly reversed aging in mice...this ought to be a good discussion; it's an interesting as hell read, albeit short.

Quote:
"The Guardian reports that scientists claim to be a step closer to reversing the aging process after experimental treatment developed by researchers at Harvard Medical School turned weak and feeble old mice into healthy animals by regenerating their aged bodies. 'What we saw in these animals was not a slowing down or stabilization of the aging process. We saw a dramatic reversal – and that was unexpected,' says Ronald DePinho, who led the study. The Harvard group focused on a process called telomere shortening where each time a cell divides, the telomeres are snipped shorter, until eventually they stop working and the cell dies or goes into a suspended state called 'senescence.' Researchers bred genetically manipulated mice that lacked an enzyme called telomerase that stops telomeres getting shorter causing the mice to age prematurely and suffer ailments, including a poor sense of smell, smaller brain size, infertility and damaged intestines and spleens. When the mice were given injections to reactivate the enzyme, it repaired the damaged tissues and reversed the signs of aging raising hope among scientists that it may be possible to achieve a similar feat in humans – or at least to slow down the aging process."

I would. My biggest fear is death. I often feel jealous of people with faith because of the ease of mind believing in an afterlife gives them. That being said, any chance to lengthen the good years of my life and be able to be active, healthy and alert would be great.

I think death is an important part of living. We need to die. The Earth is already hella over populated, we don't need superhumans living to be two or three hundred years old, while still repopulating. That's just not the way the circle of life works.

This is just stupid. We're already getting close to a shortage of food and space on Earth with the way our population is exponentially growing now, imagine if like I said, people are living 2 or 3 times longer. We'll all be fucked.

It looks like a good idea now, and all the people who are afraid of dying would be relieved because they can live they're lives the way they are now, but what happens when we get to the point where rations run low and we have to have meager lives. Suicide rates will be up a lot more I bet. Especially among those who are in this life elongating program.

I'm not gonna do it if it becomes mass produced for humans. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm going to die, so I'm gonna do it naturally.

I used to take the overpopulation idea, but if we don't put ourselves in a situation of dire survival, we'll never develop better technologies. If we overpopulate, maybe we'll look into habiting other planets, then develop the technologies to get there faster.. etc...

We'd be doing that regardless. If anything, it could make the technology worse. If they have to do it in a hurry, then it may not be as good as it could be. I'd rather have a product of good quality that took longer to make than one that was made in a hurry and may not be the best or most reliable.

I'd trade sterility for immortality, or even an extra 100 years. Could you imagine what an extra 100 years of life could do for certain individuals?

I would only go for this if everyone else did, and even then, the standard 70-90 years seems long enough. I'm comfortable with dying right now and am still young; I'd imagine the idea would only become more comfortable to me as time goes on.

I'm incredibly fearful of death, but I don't think I would want to live forever. It would be amazing to see what would become of the future as far as medicine and technological advancements go but I think I would hate never being able to die. There's already overpopulation in one country, we don't need more of it.

If we all live to 150, do you think we'd see a cup parade in Buffalo??
