Last paragraph:

Quote:
The Sabres are looking to move veteran D Craig Rivet. He has been a healthy scratch six times this season and is the club’s captain. Making $3.5 million, Rivet is going to be a tough sell.

I don't think it matters much. Maybe if they can turn him for a pick, but at the same time, you can never have enough defensemen.

With how old and slow Rivet is, I'd much rather use another Portland call up at this point.

I feel bad for Craig. He's just too old at this point.

This is a real shitty situation for Rivet and the article is right. Trying to move him may be a hard sell to any team considering how he has played when in the line up this season. I think with the right mix that he may still have something to offer but it doesn’t look like it is in Buffalo anymore.

Anyone here think he will just hang-em up instead of being traded?

Sucks for Rivet, and I do like him...though not so much when he's suited up and playing anymore. Give him a place to play and get him off our hands which will let the Sabres deal with their Captain problem.

i don't wanna jump the gun here.....but I'm gonna anyhow.

We obviously have dead weight hanging around the Sabres locker room and emotion and fan attachment aside, moving a few players like Rivet, Connolly etc would ultimately be a good thing (IMO). With the prospect of a new owner who (apparently) wants to put money into the team and make a cup contender, doesn't moving people to make room both in roster and cap space make sense? If we can assume that when (or if) Tegula takes control he will want to make moves both office and ice wise, doesn't taking care of player issues like Rivet make the future road more clear?

We have 8 NHL defensmen on our team. Move him to open up room to bring in a forward that can be a game changer.

Nobody wants him. I mean, think of it as though you're another team's GM:

Headline: "The Sabres are shopping Craig Rivet."
GM: "Well if the Sabres don't want him, we sure as shit don't."

Current Cap Space 4.263m

Trade Connolly +4.5m
Trade Rivet +3.5m

Total Cap Space = 12.263m

Who do you want and what are you going to give up for him?
(totally based on the ability of the Sabres to move them)

It's interesting to me that they're shopping him.

I just can't see anyone actually taking him. Who wants a guy making $3.5m that can't get into a lineup over Mike Weber and Andrej Sekera?

my point is exactly that. With a mega rich owner coming in who, from what we have heard, is willing to spend more, doesn't it makes sense to clear these dead salaries? Even if you only get a pick or an AHLer, freeing the space and money makes it possible to go fishing for big talent either in the summer or trade deadline. I would love to see us drop Stafford, Connolly, an Rivet and use that money to bring in an honest to god goal scorer and a big fucking power forward. Even picking up a solid top line defensemen wouldn't be a bad thing imo.

a TRUE 1st line center.. but what would we be wiling to trade to make that trade happen.. Because nobody will take Connolly Rivet or Stafford in any combination for their 1st line center.. we will have to wait for FA for our center most likely.. Our untouchables are Miller, Myers, and Vanek.. Vanek more so because his contract is so big.. anyone willing to pick him up are prolly in the playoff hunt themselves and will be keeping their best talent

Sekera has been great.

In my mind, Rivet would be packaged with someone of value to bring a return.

That's the point, Mike. Sekera has been great and Weber is proving his worth, so who wants an aging defenseman making a pile of money who can't get his ass back into the line-up over a couple of kids?

Any teams out there need veteran leadership?

i like rivet, but hes just not effective anymore. no one will take him.
