I don't think the fact that a win comes in OT matters. The only thing that matters is the win itself. Give me an hour and I'll prove it.

Alright, I tracked OT wins vs. regulation wins of last year's playoff teams. The results are all over the place, there is no correlation at all.

There were teams that had very few of their wins come in overtime Washington (20.4%) and New Jersey (16.7%) that had an awful showing in the playoffs.

There were teams that had very few of their wins come in overtime, Vancouver (16.3%) and San Jose (13.7% lowest) that had deep playoff runs.

There were teams that had a ton of their wins come in overtime Los Angeles (30.4%) and Phoenix (38%) that had an awful showing in the playoffs.

There were teams that had a ton of their wins come in overtime Montreal (38.5% highest) and Boston (35.9%) that had deep playoff runs.

The fact that a large percentage of your wins came or come in overtime means absolutely nothing.

This myth is BUSTED.

You're stats are irrelevant now.

Shirley you've seen that Washington also has more regulation wins then buffalo has wins combined?

I know, I was ignoring that fact because we are only talking about OT right now. hah, I'm picking and choosing my stats to argue with.

CV, the part you're overlooking is that all those teams made the playoffs. Buffalo is not on that pace for now. Go crunch numbers for non-playoff teams.

Sky, I'm not talking about just OT. The whole point was about regulation wins.

Anyway, the point of the thread was that it was a "kinda ugly stat"...that's all. I don't know how many times I should say it, but I suppose it's still useless - it's not determinate of their season, but it does reflect how much they've struggled so far. Nothing more, nothing less. No reason for backlash or vain attempts to prove how it doesn't mean what it means.

The fact that they are a sub-.500 team should tell you all you need to know about the season they're having. Dissecting their wins even further seems pointless.

Ugh, fine.

Teams that missed the playoffs that had a low % of extra time wins:
NYR - 10.5%
Atlanta - 17.1%
Columbus - 12.5%
Calgary - 12.5%
Anaheim - 20.5%

Teams that missed the playoffs with a high % of extra time wins
Toronto - 30%
Edmonton - 33.3%

Average percentage of extra time wins for playoff teams
25%

Average percentage of extra time wins for non playoff teams
23.7% (Holy shit, that's LESS)

The stat means about as much as the percentage of games a given teams wins on Mondays. Absolutely fucking nothing.

The scary stat wasn't the percentage of regulation wins it was the low absolute number of regulation wins.
It shows that we weren't able to dominate or outplay teams.

They have 6 regulation wins in 28 games. That's on pace for 18 regualtion wins over the season. I don't think any team has ever made the playoffs this way.

They would if they also finished with 20 overtime wins.

Lol, CV...you're crunching numbers about OT/SO wins. That stuff is a crap shoot and it should be random between playoff/non-playoff teams.

I'm talking about regulation wins, not that you really need to crunch numbers anymore. This topic probably should've been over before page 2. I didn't think it was worth that much discussion.

I do think the original point is valid. When you win in regulation, how many points does your opponent get? Oh yeah, ZERO. So, by winning in regulation, you don't5 get more points, but your opponent does get less, so ultimately, it's kind of the same thing to me. It's not how many points you have that gets you into the playoffs, but the points you have vis-a-vis other teams. The last game is a perfect example. Buffalo lead in the 3rd, but lost the lead. The result? Buffalo got one point, Boston got two. Even if Buffalo had won the game in OT, Boston still would have gotten a point, and that point could have been the difference at the end of the year.

It's an ugly, and important stat if you ask me.
