Pirates play-by-play Mark Jeanneret will be joining the Buffalo Sabres to fill in for his father and long-time Sabres voice Rick Jeanneret for a two game set in Alberta as the Sabres play Calgary and Edmonton.
Jeanneret will miss three games for the Pirates beginning on Dec. 26 in Worcester, followed by games on Dec. 28 at home against Providence and on Dec. 29 in Hartford. The Pirates will still be broadcasting on 95.5 WLOB and the rest of the Pirates Radio Network as well as online at http://www.portlandpirates.com and AHL Live using the opponents audio feed.

found this at the buffalo range. nothing major, just a small break as hes been doing.

His son did a game or two last year, didn't he?

I don't think his son did a game last year. If he did, I missed it.

I love RJ, but the stuff I've heard so far from his son has been pretty sub par. :|

Yea Mark tries too hard. He doesn't let the calls come naturally, I feel. If that is how he calls games naturally, blech.

Eh, yeah, not a fan of JR. From what I remember it sounds SO forced, like some sort of act he's putting on. And the affectation he takes on is pretty annoying. Although, i'd rather listen to him than whatever fuckstick calls the games for Boston, I want to strangle that guy.

I think people are a little too hard on his son... He's new at play-by-play so it is going to take him some time to find his own "voice" and get comfortable. I know he's a lot more high-pitched than his dad, but he's also a lot younger. When I hear games that Rick called back in the 70s his voice was a lot more high-pitched and nasally than it is now.

But with that said, when the time comes for the Sabres to find a permanent replacement for Rick, I don't know if trying to find an imitation of him is the way to go. We all know how special he is and maybe it would be best to just try and find someone with a complete different take on calling games, because we all know that Rick Jeanneret is the one and only.

But I am interested to see how his son will do.

Exactly. RJ is RJ and anyone that takes over will be seen through the RJ filter....sucks to be them.

RJ had a pretty high pitched voice in his younger days too.

I grew up by Kevin and new him and his family pretty well so it's hard to listen to him call the games since all I hear is a whiny teen in my brain...hahaha

I think Rick (JEANNERET) has come out and said that he's willing to call more games for years to come, but the travel gets to him. I wouldn't mind seeing the Sabres have Rick do all the home games plus Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto for a total of 50 games, and have Mark pick up the other 32 road games.
