Both are pending UFAs. If we do not move them, we do not save money. We can also save money by finding suitors for Stafford, likely seeking a pay increase for an avearge performance so far.

No, Stafford becomes a restricted free agent this summer. If another team tenders an offer sheet, we can match it or reject it for draft picks in return. Given Stafford's negative performance last season and this season to make or break, he is trade bait right now.

Well, he's not restricted while he's with the team. Technically he's not anything. What I meant was that when his contract's up, he's still eligible to be restricted.

What does 'eligible to be restricted' even mean?

Unless Stafford's contract is extended, be becomes a restricted free agent once his current contract expires.

Period. End of story.

I really want Semin this offseason. New owner, big move, he's been known to not show up some nights, but I think the risk may be worth the reward. I think a Vanek-Roy-Semin line would be extremely dangerous.
