Here's the story. I've got this neighbor friend who has watched about...30 games with me at my place over the last 2 years. Cool guy, we hang out once in a while, but it's usually just because we're outside hanging around or whatever, we're not like, best buds or something.

He comes over the other day, with two presents in his hands. I shoot my girlfriend a quizzical look as he hands us each our package. We open them to find this:

So, mine is the 69, hers is the 96. haha.

The fronts: (you'll notice he made HER the captain, and...somehow got me one without a number on the front? wtf's up with that? Dont the players all have the numbers on the front?)

So...yeah. My casual friend spent, what, at least a couple hundred bucks to buy us, apparently, genuine jerseys sort of as a joke. He does like to bust balls, but this just seems a bit odd. Quite frankly, it didnt occur to either me or my girlfriend to get him anything at all.

My problem, having a 69 on the jersey is really, REALLY not my style. How rude is it to change the name/number to a real player? Or even just changing the number? He seemed really genuine and sincere while giving it to me, but...he put fucking 69 on it, clearly that's a joke. But he also spent a bit of cash on them....wtf!?

Anyone have any advice? Also, is it hard to get new numbers and replace them?

turn it into an Ennis? still keep a 6... so the 9 turns into a 3... I don't think it would be that bad to do.... but got me....

I think he'd understand that you want to change the number.

Rock that shit with pride, and when people give you a funny look, nod at them with the creepiest smile you can whip out.

Yikes... that's like $350 with the customization....holy shit.

Weird spot to be in. If you want to change numbers, do it before it gets worn in at all, or it will look like shit after they change it.

A creepy smile that says "I wear running shorts around the house!"

Yeah, I dunno, if I were the gift giver it wouldn't bother me at all if you wanted to change it. I just want people to be happy.

what if you change it into a players jersey and have your "name plate and number" framed to hang in the house where you guys watch the game... that way you get a players jersey you can ware... and he can see you took the time to make something cool out of what he gave you...

so the framed deal would have 69 in it... add a sabres logo or something... im sure someone on the boards could help with a cool layout of some sorts...

Oh...I kind of like this idea. It shows his original present at least SOME measure of respect, while also giving me a jersey I wouldn't mind wearing out of the house.

Right? When I said "dude, this is too much, these things are so expensive" he said he got a 'great deal'...so, dont know what that means, but i'm guessing he spent at LEAST 250, no matter what deal he got.

I'm really just scratching my head about all of this. it's a serious escalation of friend gift giving, not sure how to respond.

A: Totally. I didnt have a jersey before, he knew that, knew I wanted one, and got a freaking PAIR of them for my household. Totally awesome.

B: Fuck, my conscience is kind of saying the same thing. (but I really want one to wear to games n shit!...which doesnt have 69 on it)

That's exactly how I would feel as well, although, I would feel a bit disappointed that I'd guessed so wrong about what to put on the back (but i'd sure as hell not put 69 on there)

yeah do some cool lay out with his original idea, frame it up and hang it... and you can make the jersey anyone you'd like at that point...

can even do like a Weber and Roy ...lol...

Weber Roy
6 Sabres 9
Logo

hahaahhaha.... Frame your name plate separate....

Honestly, ask him about it and tell him how you feel about the number 69 on a jersey then if it bothers you so much.

That was my first instinct, but then it occurred to me that even mentioning to him that i'd like to change it, is basically the same as just going ahead and changing it. Either way he becomes aware that the present he got me was not ideal, and that I'd like to change it.

Although, yes, this is the most direct way to handle it, and what i'll likely end up doing.

Just rock it at home when watching games...he doesn't have to know you'd be too embarrassed to wear it out or to a game.

Something to consider, they could be Chinese knock-offs, which would explain the missing numbers on the front and his "great deal".
I've seen knock-offs well below $100 before.

Hm, interesting...do you know how I would be able to identify a 'genuine' article?
