Phil and I have a chart for this which tracks goals, assists, and points per 60 minutes of icetime. If a forward hits over 3 points per 60 minutes of icetime, he is a superstar. If not, he isn't.

Superstars:

Sidney Crosby - 3.90 pts/60
Alexander Ovechkin - 3.61
Steven Stamkos - 3.21
Daniel Briere - 3.18
Evgeni Malkin - 3.47
Marian Gaborik - 3.35
Patrick Kane - 3.01
Marian Hossa - 3.04
Pavel Datsyuk - 3.45
Dany Heatley - 3.21
Jason Spezza - 3.41
Daniel Alfredsson - 3.17
Henrik Sedin - 3.34
Daniel Sedin - 3.36
Alexander Semin - 3.34
Nicklas Backstrom - 3.18
Joe Thornton - 3.66
Henrik Zetterberg - 3.13
Ryan Getzlaf - 3.09

Close
Ilya Kovalchuk - 2.95
Jarome Iginla - 2.90
Eric Staal - 2.92
Thomas Vanek - 2.91

Mike, I was about to say Pronger.

If you can score over a PPG almost every year, you sure seem like some sort of star in my books. That in itself is hard to do and only about 20 players a year out of 1000 in the league can score over a point per game in this league.

The players who do that, are superstars.

Um......so litterally unless they continually score over 100 points a season they aren't super stars? Because out here in the Western conference they are.

Points per season:

Henrik:
75,81,76,82,112 and on pace for ridiculousness this year.

Daniel: 71,84,74,82,85 and on pace to hit over one hundred this year.

How are these not superstars again? Perhaps being in the east with less coverage of these guys kind of skews things.

They have a 1.34 and 1.36 PPG average this year, or something like that so far.

I must object to the disrespect shown to Mary Catherine Gallagher. She's a sweet, honest girl. You'll never have to worry about where she's been. She'll always be faithful, keep the house clean, be a good mother, and won't spend all your money. Besides, don't you know how those Catholic girls are when they finally get married?!?

its just a thread for fun. FFS..

if you score 50 or more points a year, i hold you in high regard. if you score 70 or more, star. 80 or more, super star to me.

the NHL aint what it used to be in terms of star power. thats ok with me.

I can respect that, lumping 80 and 120 point guys in with equal praise shows an open mind. To me though, it's hard as HELL to score 100 these days, and for those that are good enough to do it (or at least maintain that pace) year after year, they deserve an exclusive title.

They were on another level last season, they found a superstar level, and it's here again this season. Consistently scoring 70+ points a season is amazing, but consistently scoring 100+ points grants you that coveted superstar status. And it makes it okay for the NHL whore you 24/7. If they keep it up through the playoffs and next season then I'm right there with you.

Impressive...

hmmmm the numbers are a great starting point, but some of those guys are not superstars. Gaborik for example, has superstar talent but he is hurt all the time. So how do you market him? And when he is healthy, he hasn't shown that he can keep up the production at what I consider to be a superstar level. But for the most part that list is fine with me.

The only one I found surprising was Spezza, I didn't think he put up that many points but I guess he's been hurt a lot too.

Well then you get into intangibles slong with heart, desire, etc. and those are just impossible to measure

It all kind of depends on what you mean by "superstars", like is that to hockey fans, or to the general public? If we're talking about society as a whole, you can't include anyone bu Crosby and Ovechkin, and even they might not be famous enough. Paris Hilton is far, far more famous than either one. Also sports stars from other sports (A-rod, Kobe, Lebron, Favre, etc.) are much more well known than either. From a general society standpoint, I think there are no superstars right now and probably only Gretzky qualifies for superstar status at any time over the last 30 years.

Now to hockey fans, there are a lot more superstars than the golden boys. There's Brodeur, stamkos, Charra, Pronger, Big Joe, Luongo, and the list goes on...

Keep watching the Sabres and you'll see just how many points the guy racks up. I swear it seems like he gets 2 or 3 points every time he plays Buffalo.
