Too quiet/monotone when calling games.
Sounds like a crack addled eight year old announcing goals.
Tries to say too much in his PBP at times.

From what I heard of the highlights, Kevin Sylvester was alright. I have three big knocks of him.

Not enough creativity on goal calls.
Too much energy on opponents' goals. I like the RJ deadpan... "and they score, or whatever, who cares."
Tends to fumble his words sometimes.

That's called not being biased.

No, not being biased is being fair on offering your opinion on penalty calls/non-calls. No one listening to WGR or watching MSG wants even a shred of excitement for opponents goals. And if opposing fans are watching, fuck em. Some of our fans have to deal with their shitty feeds.

One of the things people hate about RJ is his blandness for the other team. I still want him to be louder for us, but if he can be a little loud for the opponent he'd be the perfect announcer.

No. Then he'd be Joe Beninati.

I like Jeanneret's blandness for the other team. I can see why other people might not like it, but he's the perfect Sabres play-by-play guy because of that.

People don't dislike Rick Jeanneret for his blandness towards the other team, they don't like him because he's so enthusiastic towards the Sabres. Rick Jeanneret is a Sabres fan. Obviously he is going to be more excited and into it when the Sabres score or when they are playing well. I feel like he gets excited when the other team scores a great goal, has a big hit, or if the goalie makes a great save. He doesn't downplay the other team's success, but sometimes he gets a little too over exaggerated towards the Sabres. But that's because he's a fan as well as a play-by-play guy.

It's a broadcast that is MOSTLY LOCAL which means that is being watched by MOSTLY SABRES FANS. Who gives a shit what other fans think?

He doesn't do a national broadcast. Why should he be?

He gives credit to opponents when they make a good play. He's enthusiastic, but will still admit it when the Sabres get away with one. What's the problem with that?

And if I have an announcer doing PBP, I want him to be a fan of the team he's calling. It makes it more exciting and a better overall PBP calling to me.

Reason I hate national broadcasters, they are still biased towards one team and don't put in the emotion that should be there.

It's why most of us can't stand Jack Edwards. Bruins fan.

Plus national broadcasters tend to fuck things up or drop gems of stupidity because they don't know the teams as well as the local guys. That's my big pet peeve with the NFL, all their announcers are morons because they're announcers of all teams, experts of none.

The only decent NFL announcer is Gus Johnson, more than likely because he shouts about everything.

I grew up a Redskins fan and hated Troy Aikman, but he's a great color commentator. Far and away the best right now. He's pays attention to and explains a great amount of details involved in many plays, calls, clock management situations...everything.

I always said that RJ is one of the best announcers because he does show enthusiasm towards the other team. I think he does give an unbiased broadcast. However, I don't agree with you guys when you say he shouldn't be loud for the other opponent. Think of a world where you can watch center ice and all announcers gave enthusiasm to both teams. I would no longer hate NESN or the Southern Sports channels.

Actually I would still hate NESN. They are the most annoying, biased pieces of shit on the earth.

you guys think NESN is bad? watch WGN call a white sox game. hawk and steve stone.

just look up "white sox announcers" and the search finishes it for you "white sox announcers annoying"

instead of saying "white sox" they refer to them as "the good guys" and for a home run, hawk calls it "you can put it on the boarddddddd, YES!!!"

NESN is a treat compared to those two.

I agree with everything you said about those douchebags in Chicago. The are a disgrace to the White Sox organization.

i remember a tigers-white sox game a few years ago when the game was on FOX SPORTS DETROIT and WGN. on WGN, on a full count pitch to a tiger, the ball was AT LEAST 6 inches outside. ball four. the WGN guys were just outraged. i mean just angry at the world.

i flipped it to fox sports detroit, and they were laminating on how good a pitch it was but the batter, omar infante, i think, didnt bite on it.

they dont even attempt to be professional. you have no idea how bad they are till you take in a game.

edit! home run call found!

Comparing the two games he's done so far, I'd say the first game Sylvester called this season was the better of the two. His voice really pissed me off last night for some reason hahaha.

In all seriousness though and I'm sure it's been said already. I'm just too god damn lazy to go back through the thread to quote it. That is, since we've had RJ here, no matter who calls the games they will never be up to his standard. The day will come when RJ packs up his mic and goes home though and after listening to some of the WJC games, I'm kind of siding with Mike in that I think Gary Thorne would make a decent guy to call Sabres games.

Sylvester and little Jeanneret are good enough calling games so that I don't notice them for being bad, which is fine.

I like Slyvestors excitement. If MJ doesn't work out, I'd love to let Kevin take it over.
