Vanek would NOT score as many points as Crosby or Ovechkin with the same amount of play time.

Right, Ovechkin has Backstrom, and Crosby gets to play with Malkin on the powerplay, while Vanek has Derek Roy, or if Lindy is on his period, Nathan Gerbe and Cody McCormick as linemates.

I still stand by the comment of

VANEK CAN NOT, DOES NOT, AND WILL NOT SCORE AS MANY POINTS AS CROSBY OR OVECHKIN.

Putting up the points as of late and that's a good sign.

I like how he puts pressure on himself to score one, especially in a big situation. His defense is still lacking though. -12 on the score sheet.

I would like to see a good center/winger combo play with him once in his career. When roy is healthy next season, it would be beneficial to see us bring in a solid winger to compliment them both.

How many goals can you count that are his fault though? I can remember a few turnovers, but for the most part, goals against when Vanek has been on the ice have been the fault of Gerbe, Ennis, Myers, and Sekera (and in that one Pittsburgh game, Roy).

Oh yea I agree I don't think all of the defensive lapses this team has is directly pointing at Vanek, but he does have the worst plus/minus on the entire team (tied with Myers)

It's easier to observe when you go to the games, in my opinion (as I know we all do). Sometimes it appears he looks lost, and that he forgets he has to join the play (if he misses a shot, he'll usually look towards the sky for 3-5 seconds, while the play is still going on) and then sometimes he's the reason we're winning games. You don't know which Vanek you're getting on any given night, or any given shift.

Kudos to him still producing offensively while Roy is out.

Vanek has also whiffed on many perfect passes from Ennis. I've seen maybe 10 instances this year he absolutely failed.

He gets so many scoring chances that he takes them for granted. I can only dream about getting all the great looks at the net that he gets time and time again. That's what makes him great, the numerous scoring chances that he creates for himself and finds himself in through brilliant anticipation. But he squanders a lot of those chances for whatever reason.

I sincerely doubt the number is as high as ten. But if we want to play that game, we can say the same about Roy whiffing on chances from Vanek.

I see your Vanek to Roy, and I raise you a Roy to Vanek.

Vanek ALSO whiffs on Roy's passes.

He also plays a lot on the PP and scores a lot on the PP.

You can still score 50 goals and end up a minus, especially if you're a top line player and getting matched up against other teams top players.

I don't like the plus/minus argument, you need to blame the four other guys on the ice also, also put more blame on the two defenders whose job it is to prevent players from scoring, Vanek is a winger, he is responsible for the point shot blocking.

But he would get Ovechkin-like goal totals.

Like I said i'm not personally going to blame just him for our defensive woes but why is his stat such an anomaly as compared to the other forwards?

And as someone said in another thread, our team has been shot blocking very much like flamingos.

If we really wanna play this game, how many passes does Myers fuck up from the point down into Vanek? I can probably count 30 instances of that over the past calendar year...

Or how many passes does Ennis fuck up on to Connolly or Stafford?

How many times does Grier screw the pooch on a pass to Goose?

How many times does Connolly screw the pooch on a pass to...everyone?

Also how many passes get blocked from Ovechkin, Malkin, or Crosby during the games?

No one can make perfect passes every game, and no one can hit every puck on a one-timer either.

Weren't there two or three years straight that Vanek had more PP goals than Ovechkin?

Just sayin.

Ovechkin only has 2 PPG this season by the way.

2. :o

Good players can still suck at getting good results.
