Verizon is holding a press conference on 1/11/11 in New York City, and sources say the iPhone will finally be Verizon friendly.

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/01/07/ver ... ouncement/

Quote:
The Loop reports that Verizon has just issued invitations for a media event set to be held in New York City next Tuesday, January 11th. The topic of the event is unknown, but speculation of course centers around a possible introduction of the iPhone on the carrier, although most observers have been expecting that such an introduction would be made at an Apple media event given the company's penchant for secrecy.
Verizon Wireless on Friday sent an invitation to select press to attend a special event on January 11, 2011.

The Verizon event will be held in New York and while it doesn't mention anything about Apple this could be the Verizon iPhone. Typically, Apple's special events are held on the company's campus in Cupertino, Calif.

The January 11th date for the Verizon media event matches a report from yesterday about a Verizon iPhone introduction, although that report indicated that it would be an Apple event.

A separate report today claims that evidence is pointing to a February 3rd launch date for a major new Apple product, presumed to be the Verizon iPhone. Given Apple's history of product releases, an official introduction would be expected in the very near future in order to meet that launch date.

Update: Sources have indicated to All Things Digital that the event is in fact the Verizon iPhone introduction.
No details on its focus, but sources close to the company tell me this will indeed prove to be the long-rumored Verizon iPhone announcement. Question now is will Apple CEO Steve Jobs join Verizon president and COO Lowell McAdam onstage to make it.

The most rock solid proof is the fact that Gizmodo wasn't invited to this, and Verizon won't tell them why.

I'm glad it's finally happening, but I probably won't be rushing out to get one. Doesn't make sense to get it now then have Apple release the iPhone 5 in a few more months.

Lots of suckers will buy it before the iPhone 5 comes out in June and sets everything else back 6 months again.

The Thunderbolt is basically the Verizon version of the EVO. It's VZ's first LTE phone.

No release date yet. Was just announced.

nothing yet, but its in VZW inventory, and HTC sent out to retailers that they can order mock ups and accessories right now. usually when that happens, a release is 2-3 weeks away. i heard january 20th, but thats a rumour at this point.

3 weeks could happen. Just have to live in a market with LTE, which isn't Buffalo. Interestingly enough, Buffalo isn't on the 2011 expansion plan for LTE.

thats silly. i thought i saw buffalo on their map in 2011. my buddy has the evo in grand rapids, which is 4g covered, but not where he lives (suburb).. he gets all giddy when he enters 4g coverage.

LTE is the next cell-phone / wireless data standard. It's advertised as 4G even though it really isn't.

Initial LTE rollout was in Rochester. The press release I read didn't list Buffalo, but there's a map from the keynote that has a dot on Buffalo. Just isn't clear what timeframe that map is referring to.

EDIT: Yeah, the 'COMING SOON" section of the website doesn't list anywhere in NY for 2011 expansion plans.

I'm definitely waiting a bit to get my LTE phone, and if this really is the impending announcement of the iPhone...it complicates things. Big Red is on the warpath.

4G coverage for my friend's EVO is only in Raleigh and he's never used it yet since it doesn't cover where he lives or is around most of the time. haha.

How good is LTE though? I've read that AT&T's 3G is faster than Verizon's new LTE. I know that AT&T's 3G is far and beyond better than Verizon's 3G too.

Then, you also have to consider how readily available LTE will be. That map can't be too large.

Their executives are scared and are downplaying LTE.

Wow. That's pretty solid.
