i was pretty young when this all went down, but from what i remember, peca pretty much benched himself and wouldn't play for an entire season. i'm sure someone who wasn't 11 when this all went on remembers a bit better and could tell you more.
it was a hold out. stupid move by peca, and he was PISSED about it. he even talked some free agents out of playing for buffalo, saying the front office treats its players poorly. oddly enough, its also why grier left originally, so it wasnt all bunk.
that being said, peca eventually figured out what a lovely place buffalo is to play for, and he asked to play for the sabres for a fourth line centre spot in 08-09, i believe. darcy said he wasnt interested.
peca messed up, but he is a gentleman who admitted he was wrong. thats why i love peca.
