Ummm a glove has an inch of padding on the front. I have no idea why you would think they don't have much padding, I have hockey gloves, worn them, and played with them on, and been hit in the hands.

If it hits your palm. The outside of the hand isn't that unprotected, not with today's gloves, and it all depends on where it hits you. A 100 mph slapshot would destroy most parts of the body even with pads on.
