To have unknowingly skated around for the Buffalo Sabres for at least three games with your own name misspelled on the back of your sweater ...
Uh-huh: He was Rob "Neidermayer" after a nameplate goof on the team's alternate jerseys that coincided with the end of the first half of the season.
From the Buffalo News on Monday:
As for the jersey mixup, Niedermayer has played for three straight games with his name spelled "Neidermayer" on his back. The Sabres got a new set for the second half and the mistake wasn't caught until Saturday. It will be fixed for tonight.
"I didn't even notice to be honest with you," a surprised Niedermayer said when told about the gaffe Monday. "I'll have to remedy that."
The Sabres wore their traditional home jerseys against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday before winning at the Boston Bruins last night.
In fairness, "Niedermayer" has always been an unavoidable pitfall for transposed and incorrect letters; and it's far from the most egregious misspelling on a game-worn hockey sweater. That honor falls to the New York Rangers and Wayne Gretzky, as Paul Lukas of UniWatch recalled in a countdown of all-time jersey gaffes:
5. Wayne Gretzky, Oct. 30, 1997. You're the greatest player in the history of the sport, you're playing for the league's marquee franchise, and your name is synonymous with hockey, so you'd think they could at least spell it correctly. But you -- and whomever lettered your jersey -- would be wrong.

When Marc-Andre Gragnani(notes) was stepping in the penalty box last night it appeared he was wearing his nameplate from the "slug" uniforms, rather than the new-throwback (but not the new, vintage, throwback third jersey) uniforms. It looked like he had the rounded, modern-looking text from the past few seasons rather than the traditional block lettering.

i think the team does it themselves with a stamping/heat process. at least thats how it is in baseball. id assume thats how it is in all sports. but i could be wrong.

The pictures show the letters are all sewn on, and it even says it in this description.

It's all double-tackle twill lettering and appliqué twill graphics, only the premiere ones are silkscreened. Authentic is all sewn on.

In most cases, letters/numbers have what is called "Gator-grip" on the back of tackle twill. When heated, it helps hold the letters in place. Then, they are sewn with the zigzag stitching. Same goes for numbers.

Side note: In some cases for alternate "A"'s, they used to attach Velcro to the eligible players jerseys for easy changing if need be.

i remember watching sports jobs with junior seau, and he was a dodgers bat boy, and they made him a jersey, in like.. less then 3 minutes. with a heat stamp process. i assumed it was the same in the NHL.

Yeah, they can make up a jersey hella quick if need be. When the IIHF Worlds were played in Halifax a few years ago, they were doing customized team Canada jerseys right in front of you at the Metro Center. They were the pro twill numbers, just heat pressed on. Easy way to mass produce them for sure. If you wanted, you could always just stitch around the numbers at a later time.

The letters would be a bitch unless they were on a name plate because it's a pain to have to stitch around every single letter with all of the jersey under the machine. I've done a few like this for some friends jerseys (Rangers/Redwings) and swore I'd never do it again. Name plate is definitely the easier and quickest way to go.

I'll toss this in here as well since we're talking about customizing & what not. I am now the proud owner of 2 RBK Edge 1.0 authentic Sabres jerseys. One cost me $96 and the other $99. Compliments of ebay, a Vanek size 56 and a Myers size 56! The jerseys alone were purchased for $240 from another seller and the kits added afterwards. Still, 2 authentic jerseys for less than the cost of one unlettered.

Ok is it just me or does the grey under the armpit on the white jerseys just remind you of pit stains every time a player raises their arms?

HAHA. Yes, I've thought the same thing.

Funny, because that's exactly why it's there. If they left it white, you'd end up with yellow stains.

Ah, the pit stains don't bother me as much as the front piping. At least it gives the impression that on nights where the boys take a night off, they're working hard out on the ice and it's an honest man's sweat in them pits
