Hey Guys. recently ran into a major hard drive issue on a tower im attempting to refresh and give to my grandmother to tool around on. Gateway screen pops up, i cannot access BIOS or ANYTHING else.....computer just beeps almost immediately and gives the following message...

" A problem with the hard drive has been detected. Consult the troubleshooting section of your users manual. Hit enter to continue"

After hitting enter I get a small gatway logo in the top left of the screen and the following directions over the logo

"Press <F4> to Resume"

This does nothing. I've tried restarting and using R, S, F, every single F button and cannot seem to bypass this to get into to the BIOS to change the computer to boot from the recovery disk. HELP!!!

Unplug the hard drive and see if you can get into the bios. Or put in a bootable CD without a hard drive in...the machine should default to the next bootable option or prompt you to go into the BIOS settings.

X I do not have a drive, I have tried unplugging the ribbon and power to the hard drive and its still goes through the setup and looks for an install and the hard drive

yeah, try what NYI said...do you have a bootable CD (windows installation or otherwise) and a CD-ROM drive plugged in?

I'm no computer genius, but I can build them and what not. I think that hard drive is bad, and I suggest you buy a working one(computer) off craigslist for $50(the same you'd pay for a new HD). Save you a lot of headache. Believe me, I know. It's what I do with my parents when they have computer trouble.

You said you tried the 'F' keys...did you try 'ESC', 'Space' or 'Enter'?

Everything I read said that gateways always use F1 or F2. Are you using a USB keyboard? If so, does the computer have a PS2 connector (I'm assuming it does if it's old)? You may HAVE to use a PS2 keyboard in order for the motherboard to accept any inputs.
