Interesting that Mancari was not called up. Played 3 games up here and 1 assist and a -1. But 20/25 in Portland and a +10. What's that say?

They seem to like to cycle callups around a bit, get different guys brought up when they need them.

I like the idea of that.

I notice that looking back through the callups from web articles. I would be nice if one could separate themselves, but then again, if they were...they'd probably not be in Portland.

maybe I just wish Mancari would play up to that 225 lb. frame.

Kind of want Niedermayer benched and Mancari up full time. I know the discussion on Mancari is pretty played out, but there's no way he can be worse than Niedermayer at this point.

I like that Ellis is coming back up. He's a hard worker... maybe it will rub off?
Let's see, Ellis is a LW, and Byron is a center. Where do you think they'll wind up line-wise?

He could get Kovalchuck +- numbers, and not score. That would be bad.

Byron's listed as 144 pounds on the Sabres website but 170 on the Pirates . . . oh jeez.

...and the truth is somewhere in between. Maybe its the guy who runs the "guess your weight" game at the Erie Country Fair has an offseason job with the Sabres?

But at this point, as long as he does something positive on the ice, I'll be happy.

Hey he got and assist and ended the game with a 0 plus/minus. I'll take it.

The Paul Byron stat-line watch:

2GP, 1G, 1A, 2P, +1

Me like.

Byron is quickly making himself known. If he can increase is size somewhat more while maintaining his speed, he will become more effective.

I liked what I seen from Byron in the preseason. The guy is a smart player and has some really good speed. I wouldn't mind seeing the kid put on about 15-20 pounds without losing a step.

You're kidding me right? I never knew that's what he had to do.

Not really, outside of Ennis, Gerbe, Roy, and Byron, everyone else is 6 feet or taller. And all four of those guys have the speed and skill to do some damage. Gerbe is still on the fence with me, but Byron and Ennis are proving they are super skilled, and we all know Roy is already.

The team is not the midget team of the NHL anymore.

dammit. paul byron has played 2 games, and was drafted in the 6th round.

hold out before we say this kid is "super skilled" and throw all this praise on him. i know everyone wants to believe in the best, but damn. its been 2 games!

and i thought i was overplaying my optimism.
