Crosby does not own in any of those stats. He may have better defensive stats then Vanek, but look at the real defensive forwards, Bobby Ryan has triple the hits Crosby does, double the takeaways, and has 22 goals.

Lucic has 4 times as many hits, Ovechkin has 5 times the hits Crosby has.

Blocked shots, Kesler has 49, double the amount Crosby has, St. Louis has double also and same with Mike Richards.

For a forward, Crosby doesn't come anywhere near close to being the guy you would trust on the ice with a one goal lead in the final two minutes.

Because hits don't mean shit really, and blocked shots are more important than hits. Also he has 15 takeaways and 29 giveaways. Not really someone who is all that good defensively. Joe Thorton has 68 and Toews has 61.

Vanek has 22 takeaways and 33 giveaways.

Defensive players have more takeaways.

Would you argue Datsyuk is a great defensive player? No you wouldn't. 44 hits, 11 blocked shots, but 47 takeaways to 20 giveaways.

I think you missed what I meant with this statement. I didn't mean he OWNED the league with those stats, but only he had a much higher amount than Vanek.

The moral of the post was the 5 on 5 stats between the two players. Drastically different.

And I guess I don't get that last part. Who wouldn't say Datsyuk is one of the best complete forwards in the league?

I guess my wording was backwards on the Datsyuk part.

Would you argue he was a bad defensive forward is what I mostly meant, and no you wouldn't argue that.

My issue with Goose is that even for a hustle guy, he always looks slow. Hustle guys might be slow, but they usually at least don't look it.

How does everyone think Vanek did last night with 16 minutes of ice time? He did not seem to do much again.

He's playing injured. Lindy cut his icetime down a bit.

Is it the hammering he takes every year that limits his ice time?

It otherwise seems odd that Lindy would keep his minutes down ... after that initial conditioning question that was a topic for media fodder early in his career?

There was an article that broke down all the injuries he had last season and it was a rather long list. Can't remember the media outlet that put it out, but I remember if was a rather long injury list that ended with the slewfoot he got against Boston.

Vanek had two assists against the Senators. Good for him!

That's good, surprised you aren't bitching about how one was a secondary assist or why didn't he score a goal.

He's terrible, we should have taken the four 1st round picks instead.

Really?

The Sabres only had like 1 minute of power play time the entire game. I guess I'm being a smart ass but I don't get why this thread is still going. The more power play time the Sabres get the more Vanek plays, it's been that way for years, am I the only one who has figured this out?

If he's hurt he's playing through it just fine it seems, most guys with nagging injuries prefer to play the norm or more because that's the only time it doesn't hurt. Because there is a ton of blood pumping through the injured area I guess, and the adrenaline is going. Vanek doesn't seem hindered in any way to me, just didn't get the bounces.

He's injured and was a game time decision last night. Ruff cut his ice-time the last few games just to reduce any risk of making his injury more severe.

And he still got two assists last night and were huge reasons why the team won that game.

This is my final comment.

If you think Vanek is as good as Crosby and Ovechkin offensively, Wake up. He's not.

Blasphemy! I shall continue to see Vanek as the greatest thing to happen to the world since frozen water through Blue & Gold colored homer glasses, and no one can make me see different!

If Vanek got the same amount of icetime as Crosby and Ovechkin, he'd be a 50 goal scorer.

And probably would have 100 points a year too.

He's not as good offensively as Ovechkin and Crosby. Never will be, never has been.

The most ES TOI/G any forward gets is Kovalchuk at 17:35. He's got 29 points and a -29.

Last season Kovalchuk played 76 games, scored 85, and had a +10 with 16:32.

Sometimes more = less.

But those players don't only get ES time. Most of them get a shit ton of time on the powerplay too.
