WKBW Sports Director John Murphy interview Terry Pegula who expects the Board of Governors to vote on the purchased Feb 22.

Quote:
BUFFALO (WIVB) - Sabres fans will have to wait 17 days for their new owner. Speaking with News 4 Sports Director, Terry Pegula says he expects to take control of the team on February 22nd. That's when the NHL Board of Governors should approve his $189 million dollar purchase of the team from Tom Golisano.

Pegula tells Murphy that he's excited about becoming the Sabres owner, and believes the team "will win the Stanley Cup, more than once."

By taking over on February 22nd, Pegula will have nearly a full week of control before the NHL trade deadline on the 28th.

The approval by the NHL Board of Governors is expected to come easily, as the league has already met with Pegula and researched their background. His meeting last weekend at the All Star Game with the Executive Committee laid the groundwork for the approval. The Board of Governors do not need to meet to approve the sale, they can vote by fax.

Pegula is expected to remain silent about his plans for the team until he officially takes control.

Hoping the ownership change is effective that date and Darcy stays past through the trade deadline, Darcy will have six days to keep his job by making moves. Anything short is unacceptable.

I'm assuming it'll be that day. At least he's expecting it to be that day

If anything, we should be moving dead weight.
Let the rebuilding happen this summer...it's too much of a tall order to turn it around at the trade deadline this year IMO.

If I was a religious man I'd be speaking to sky about moving good old Timmy C.

Do you see any teams with the cap room going after Timmy as a rental? He's costly but only has 1 year remaining. Maybe we can at least get something for him. I really hope we just sell this deadline and maybe make a few moves this summer to improve.

Pommers and Timmy +2nd for Malkin... Pens need a center rental and a winger ... Malkin's hurt, but Ill take an injured Malkin! Price will be lower, Pens will need some help... could pull off a decent fleece job....

No way. The only way Pittsburgh would give up Malkin is for cap relief and they would add Pommers 5.3m and Timmy's 4.5. Even if the wanted to do it, the couldn't because they'd be over the cap.

I hear Pittsburgh needs a center, they lost one for 10 months...somehow...I think he was trampled by a giraffe

If I'm Terry, I'm telling him to pound sand and fuck off.

He's on pace for under 40 points, for a 2nd line center. No thanks.

If he brought other things to the table (leadership, grit, defensive play, face-off proficiency, even consistent effort would be nice!) then we should consider it.

But he doesn't have any of those qualities, so farewell to him....

The problem I see is that we really don't have the personnel to fill in at Center. I don't think Luke Adam is ready, and I don't think asking Ennis or Hecht to play center is an ideal solution either.

Good point.

The problem I have is the potential risk of Connolly's game (or lack thereof) rubbing off on the kids.

But yeah, we have serious depth problems at center (and offense in general)

Yeah, It's pretty much a lose-lose situation. If some of our newbies were a bit more defensively responsible, we could try and grab another 2.5 line center along with Adam, and try and split second line scoring with the third line. Assuming Niedermayer and Grier are gone next year along with Connolly we'd have the following

Vanek - Roy - Stafford
Ennis - ???? - Pominville
Hecht - Adam - ????
Kaleta - Gaustad - McCormick

And some amalgam of Ellis, Byron, Gerbe, Mancari, and company to fill in.

Malkin may never be the same player again. No way in hell should we pick him up. That's entirely too much of a gamble.
