Quote:
Star center Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks won't face any supplemental league discipline for his hit Wednesday night on Vancouver Canucks blue-liner Dan Hamhuis, a source told ESPN.com.

Hamhuis left early in the third period after his head bounced hard off the end glass following a shoulder hit by the Ducks captain. Hamhuis lay flat on the ice for several minutes before being helped to the dressing room. Hamhuis' condition should be updated further later Thursday by the Canucks.

The NHL's hockey operations staff in Toronto took a look at the hit Wednesday night but a source said it deemed the hit legal so Getzlaf won't face any further discipline.

"I don't want to hurt anybody out there," said Getzlaf, who also had an assist in the Ducks' 4-3 victory, his first game back after missing six weeks because of nasal sinus fractures. "I didn't leave my feet, I kept my shoulder down and he was just following through on a pass. It was an unfortunate accident. He turned as he made his pass and he was well aware that I was coming."

Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said Hamhuis seemed fine in the locker room after the game but insisted he didn't see the hit and wouldn't comment on it.

"Dan has the glass plastered to his face right now," he said. "This is a physical game, a big man hitting a defenseman, it's part of the game."

Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

no offense, but that to me was a d-bag hit... you see the number on his back you shouldn't be throwing a shoulder into him... how can the NHL be so inconsistent... (spelling) Volchankov get 3 games for skating through a guy and Getzlaf blasts this guy in the back and jumps at him.. ok rub him out along the boards, but don't make that hit...

stupid NHL... they are not gonna be happy until someone is seriously (paralyzed on the ice) injured... Bettmen and Campbell should be ashamed...

He hit him from behind or at least the blind side, he stuck out his elbow, and he even jumped into it. I'd say that's pretty consistent with what the NHL does, offensive stars that put butts in seats and excite sponsors are allowed to knee, charge, elbow, and blindside opponents without even being penalized let alone suspended. It's the unwritten Ovechkin rule.

and its bullshit... its sad that it is going to take the ending of someone's career for this crap to change... get rid of the instigator, bring back the goon and let the players handle it! They did a hell of a better job of keeping players safe than Bettmen and Campbell are!

1) He turned his back after seeing Getzlaf

2) Getzlaf doesn't jump, he barely even leans

3) There was no elbow

Watch it again man. A few times. It really doesn't look like anything other than unfortunate. I don't see any malice.

He turned his back. Getzlaf was able to see that, comprehend that, and accept it. I agree there was no elbow and no jumping, but I think it's a dick move to hit someone into the boards like that.

if he doesn't jump, why are his skates off the ice? they highlight him off his skate.... he didn't need to make that hit... the pass was already off... yes getz came in fast, its a fast game, but you don't need to take that hit...

It wasn't late and it wasn't blindsided. I believe his momentum caused Getzlaf to leave the ice during/after the hit. It was a clean shoulder to shoulder hit with physics taking over. That type of hit happens in every game and no one thinks any different. This just stands out because he was knocked out.

Hell, even the Canucks coach isn't upset about it.

Nor was their media:

http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Wake ... story.html

Nor was the NHL, nor the guys on VS, nor any analysts. If you guys want maybe we can either play flag hockey, or we can make the maximum player size that of Gerbe. It's pretty sad to see as many people as there are calling it dirty. It almost makes me wonder why I even talk hockey on the internet. I mean this one just seems so cut and dried. Imaginary elbows??? Charging?? Boarding?? Jumping?? Seriously.

The last point I want to make is that people say, "he didn't have to hit him". Well, they know titi about sports then. If you can take a guy out of a game with a legal hit you do it. EVERY TIME. No matter what sport, even at the collegiate level. every competitor who's ever played a contact sport knows this. I just watched a doc on the Harvard/Yale game from '68, and even they had that mentality. If you don't like hitting, there's always golf.

Not every ugly hit is a bad one. Each time someone goes down like this the first thing people say is elbow, jump, blindside, head shot etc. Sometimes you hit someone and they get hurt.

I Dallas Star player just hurt a Blackhawk with a clean hip check and he got a double minor. If Getzlaf or another revenue generating player did that it would not have even been a penalty. I'll try and find a video of it later but I doubt any Stars fans are passionate enough to utube it.....

Vigneault, however, is defending Getzlaf.

"I thought it was a good hit by a big player," said Vigneault. "Dan (Hamhuis) was watching his pass and should have been trying to protect himself a little bit, because some guys finish hits. Some don't.

"I mean, Hank and Danny (Sedin) are coming at you, maybe you can watch your pass. Getzlaf's coming at you, you've got to have your head's up."
