There's no federal cash, no private sector commitment, and absolutely no guarantee that NHL hockey will ever return.

But Quebec City has announced it will nonetheless begin construction within several months of a new NHL-style hockey arena -- with or without any involvement from Ottawa or private industry.

Quote:
Charest says the province will increase its funding commitment and is now ready to pay half the arena cost -- as long as the total price tag doesn't exceed $400 million.

Charest says the door's always open if the Ottawa or the private sector want to contribute later.

Although I'd love to see a new barn and team in Quebec city, I'm not a fan of federal money being pumped into getting this project off the ground.

Fuck that.

No way should Quebec get federal funding, when we didn't see a dime for our arena.

Quebec is Canada's biggest leach. Fuck them.

Not Canadian, but I'm going to agree.

I'd love to see Quebec City get another NHL team, personally.

The federal is never gonna fund it, and they shouldn't. That's why Charest and Labeaume had this plan B of funding it 50-50. It's kind of a political move for Charest, the prime minister whose popularity is extremely low. Also, they had a 70 millions offer from private investors but they refused it, wanting the building to be the city's property. And honestly, economically, a rink isn't something to make profit on.

After that, bringing back an NHL team is still far from happening, but Bettman had made it clear that Quebec would never have a team back if they didnt construct a rink, now, there it is. That was also needed for a shot to get the Olympics in 2012.
And, c'mon, the Colisée was 61 years old lol...

I also wonder what's with the hate of people from Quebec. I mean, i get the hate of Habs fans and Quebec and the rest of Canada don't like each other too. But... if we get on the nerves of people so much, it's because we want something to cheer for. Hardcore Nordics fans still hate the Habs, and besides them, in Quebec there is nothing to cheer for. We need that, looking back, we understood how much it meant to us. I'm having a hard time explaining it, but as Buffalonian, I think you can understand how much a sport team can mean to a community... we just need it.

/ Anyway, sorry about that...

Doesn't Winnipeg have an NHL size arena too?
