The strongest statement made was the $100,000 fine on the Isles team, given because the Isles "must bear some responsibility for their failure to control their players," said Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.

Sure, some blame goes to the NHL officials who couldn't keep the game in control, but blame also rests on the Isles coaching staff for not taking control of the team's blatant goonery. The fact the Isles were winning 6-0 at the time the mayhem broke out doesn't help their case either.

"Who wants to puss out on TV"

Well, if goalies are at such a disadvantage as you say they are, then it would be perfectly understandable if Johnson let his boys take care of it, right?
Johnson accepted the challenge, so don't sit there and say he didn't want to fight. He's a goalie. He doesn't HAVE to fight. There is no pussy out or fight when you're a goalie getting challenged. It was Johnson's decision, he went with it.

$100,000 Chump change for the team. If they really wanted to send a message to the team you take the salary's of all the players who got a game misconduct that game, and make the team pay that amount of money to the league.

Then you take the two guy's who got suspended and take the salary they lose in the games and make the team also pay that amount.

100k is not sending a statement to any team. A highly paid player could easily pay that amount out.

Mario Lemieux's statement from the Pens' official site:

Quote:
Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn’t hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.

The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed.

We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it.

Holy pissed off, Batman.

Let me also say, as I tweeted, he has every right to be pissed about Friday night's shenanigans, but has no right to say anything about it until he addresses Matt Cooke's shenanigans first.

The Isles were pissed their goalie lost a fair fight to another goalie in a mutually agreed-upon bout? Weak fucking argument.

that would be a weak argument, if that was the argument i was making.

or that dipietro was run 3 times by cooke the previous time he was in net against the pens. or that blake comeau was lost to a concussion. or that after that goalie fight, the pens were whopping it up and fist bumping while dipietro was hurt.

take your pick. youd be pissed too.

no, i admit fully dipietro kinda got what he deserved, that was his fault. i just see why the isles were so livid, because of so many other things. and im glad the isles got some revenge. i hope this is the beginning the of a long rivalry.

Yeah I agree, I think the Penguins ID this season started out the right way, but Matt Cooke's personality seems to have taken over the locker room. Dumb yinzers in the stands crying "Cookie" make me sick. And without Malkin they are too boring for words. I'm glad somebody put them in their place.

I'll add to the fuck Mario. To the fans, this is entertainment. As long as no one gets hurt, and the fans are happy, he shouldn't give a fuck. Hell, games like this will put money in his pockets. Maybe he's just sore his team got skooled by the Isles, and pounded on as well. Well, buckle down for some tough times Mario, because it ain't going to get any better for your club any time soon. Maybe he should just not watch the games till he gets his pageant winner back.

disclaimer: I've always liked Mario, I just disagree with his comment.

A smart goalie would accept the fight and also leave his cage on LOL. Obviously Johnson is confident that he can fight anybody but you could see how hard a time he had keeping his balance with those dull goalie skates on. That's why challenging the goalie in the first place is about as bush league and weak as it gets. And in his first NHL game, he must be so proud of himself, and the Islanders must be so proud of him. When I play rec ball or ice hockey I always stick up for my goalie, I don't feel compelled to fight any other time unless my goalie is getting wacked or roughed up.

Mario, you won your first Cup because Ulf Samuelsson took out Cam Neely's knee and pretty much ended his entire--UNBELIEVABLY--entertaining career. You did not care about dirty hockey then.

I also don't recall any comments concerning the integrity of the league when your teammate Darius Kasparitus knocked out Lindros.

And now you are paying Matt Cooke like 2.5 million to start all of this shit, and you probably thought it was cool when Johnson caved in Diepietro's face after he foolishly came to defend the honor of a teammate who only wanted to get some attention. And you probably thought Talbot's blind side hit was cool too.

You also threatened to sell the team to Balsille just to put pressure on the government so you could get a gaming license for your buddies.

The older you get, the more you remind me of my dad, and I hardly know my dad.
