You can't automatically assume anything, but you CAN make predictions based on a player's statistical history and personal qualities like work ethic and competitiveness.

I think that's fair.

Just as one can't assume something would have continued, the other can't assume that it wouldn't. That's not a fair argument either way.

Sure, if you get off on predicting what could have happened in the past, then ok.

My objection to all this was the assertion that Stafford was a 3 time 20 goal scorer, when in fact he's only reached that mark twice.

I agree with you there. I'm just saying while determining a player's value, you should take note that it's a mark that he potentially could have achieved had it not been for a couple of underlying factors.

Part of the idea that stats don't tell the whole story about players.

Dare I say Stafford is who we hoped he would be?

I said I thought, not that he was.

I was lazy, and didn't feel like looking to see if he really was or wasn't yet.

They should give him a 2 year deal @ 2.5 a season. If he can put up these numbers again next season, then sign him long term.

I like it! But the only problem is that he would have to agree with to that. I'm sure his agent is going to be a greedy dickhead and try to get him a boatload of cash.

I know, we can only hope that Staff isn't a dick and realizes that he has been a sack of shit these prior seasons and that he at least owes us a few more seasons to see if he really has reached his potential, or if he is a bust that's just happening to have a single good season.

I am totally having these thoughts this year about Staffy :?
I hope it isn't so.

If he keeps it up through the rest of the season give him a one year deal for 2.5-3. If he does the same next year give him 4+.

I like that. Seems he's been motivated by the old contract year. Keep him on his toes.

Well, he is a restricted free agent so he is not going to get what a UFA would, so that's one positive thing. Based on his career so far, I think he is worth 3 million give or take a half mil.

I don't see any scenario where he would be awarded as much as Giroux's 3.75, but if he keeps on this terror you just never know...

FURRYPOWAH!!

In the Tampa Game he had 3 goals on 3 shots, and he scored his first 3 shots yesterday.

LOL. and if you really want to look at it. one of those 3 shots was really a pass that went in. 3 goals on 2 shots. ;)

3.5 million would be a fair price right now, I think. That's about what Hecht and Rivet make, and there's no way Stafford regresses that badly. Actually, if he keeps it up it will be hard to sign him for that kind of money. I hope his RFA status gives the FO some leverage when it's time to make a deal.

I don't think this is a fluke. Lindy has said that Stafford was their best player in training camp. We were all pumped in the preseason when we heard how hard he was working. He doesn't seem like a cash-in-and-drop-out kind of player to me.

Either put the money down, package him in a trade for a badass center, or cash in on a ridiculous offer sheet. Just don't let him walk away for nothing!

Trade him at the deadline. He's valuable now.

So, should we go back to the pre-lockout days where the Sabres drafted well, and as soon as they became valuable, we trade them away?

At some point you have to start keeping talent that you have.

No, I'm saying we can get stuff from him because he's valuable. I'm not saying trade every fucking guy we have.

If Stafford was a pending UFA, I'd be more inclined to agree with you.

He's restricted. You can keep him for a reasonable price and see if this year is legit or a fluke. I don't see the rush to get rid of him.

i tend to agree with you on this one... i like a nice lil 2 year deal, giving him a lil bump in pay. Get to see if this is legitimate and makes the contract tradable if he falls off...
