So, I kinda want a PC again. A laptop would be best for right now because I'm still in school.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I really do not want to spend more than $600, but if the right deal came about, I'd consider it. I play games and stuff, so I need something that can play them moderately well.

All the big names pretty much offer the same thing. I'm a Toshiba loyalist so I'm going to suggest them out of personal preference. These are fairly beefy for the $620 price point.

Me, I'm in the market for a new laptop myself so I'm going through the same thing you are. I may end up going back to Ubuntu to be honest.

I also have a Toshiba I spent around $500 on I think.

Me, I'm decided on the screen size - 13.3 inch. I've got a few I'm looking at, all in the "ultrathin" category.

I also recommend HP; things to look for that usually end up slowing your PC down - a slow hard drive (try to find one that has a 7200RPM drive) and slow/inadequate RAM (you should be able to find a 64 bit laptop with 4gb RAM+).

Haven't looked into it, but it was on Yahoo's site and HP is listed! Worth a look!

I bought an HP before my current laptop, and I hated it. It had updating problems right from the start and I was on the phone w/customer support the first two days I owned it. I returned it and paid a little more for the Fujitsu I'm now typing on. It was the best decision. I'd stay away from HP.

What kind of gaming?
Serious gaming on a laptop will very quickly take you above your budget.

If price is your main consideration, check out and compare machines on tigerdirect.com and newegg.com

The entry level alienware gaming laptop starts at $599

I'm actually buying that laptop this week. With a few modifications, of course (SSD, mainly). The really neat thing about that laptop is that you can choose whether you want to use on-board video processing (for standard web/schoolwork) or the video card the machine has (for gaming). Using on-board video is great because it saves battery life.

Another neat thing is you can change the color of the light under the keyboard, and have different notifications - let's say you get an email, you can have the keyboard blink blue or red, or whatever. Pretty sweet.

I take issue with this post - have you had ONE bad HP, or multiple bad HP laptops? I've installed literally hundreds of HPs, without much issue at all. I've always had awful luck with Dell (they're the ones people most often call me for help with).

let me put it this way. i got an HP dv2000 in january 2008. the DV series has motherboard problems. the motherboard fried in august 2009, leaving me up shit creek. that said, i purchased another HP, this time a dv4t. why did i purchase another HP after the previous one had known motherboard issues? i loved it that much. i still have the old one, with hopes to repair it eventually, and use it as a traveling lap top (AKA porno lap top)

I have an HP Pavilion DV7. It is great for all of the building i do for Ubuntu, as well as being a code writer for space weather models. Since I have a desktop at home that acts as a server for all of my needs (building code, sharing music, hosting blogs/websites). I don't really need a laptop that has all of this power. So what type of laptop you want depends on what you'll be doing on it.

I'm in the market for a lightweight 12" laptop, with high battery life that I can take around (of course on Ubuntu) and do whatever I need on whatever machine I need to **<3 SSH**.
This would be:
~2GB RAM
high battery life
cheap SATA
NVIDIA graphics card (i hope)

I'm just getting tired of carrying my 7LB laptop around when I can get one for 1/3 of that weight.

Yes, it was just one bad laptop. I could be way off base with my assessment. And it fact now that I think about it, the laptop I bought was a Compaq. Not an HP, but owned by HP. But it was a piece of shit compared to my Fujitsu. I do blame HP for quality control on their subsidiaries, of which Compaq is one, so by extension I wouldn't buy an HP.

There is a sweet deal on an Alienware system, but the screen is only 11.6.

You can see it here:

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2688451

I'm just concerned because 11.6 seems so small (that's what she said) and I don't think it's ideal for gaming.

Oh, and Cross, I only play things like WoW and Starcraft II. I don't really need something too demanding. I play all my FPS on console and stuff.

That system is pretty freaking awesome. It's got everything you need for the right price.

There is also a coupon code for $100 off.

Do you think it will be too small, Jeremy?

It's never let me down ;) lol...

If the screen is too small, you always have the option to connect the laptop to a monitor (both HDMI and VGA). To be honest, I'm of the train of thought that you buy a laptop for portability, and that's what a small laptop offers you. It's not heavy, it has good power, and good battery life. The problem is, honestly, if you want a bigger screen with the same specs as this laptop, it's going to cost a LOT more.
