Stars were just fizzled out with that trade. Wonder if this is all caused by the salary cap and it just took this long to see these types of things?

And that's what a good GM does! Great move by Pittsburgh. Again another move in the Eastern Conference by a team that wants to go far and then you have Darcy. Lets wait until the last minute to do anything.

I guess, maybe they are planning on bidding heavily to keep Richards and his concussion this summer. Talent wise I think they lost that deal by a lot, Gogo is good but he isn't that good. The Pens have like 10 million of cap space free due to injuries and I think they can cover those salaries next season when everybody is healthy.

So far I am not impressed with Darcy, I wonder if Mr. Nil is still looking for a GM position?

I would have to assume this is a move by the current ownership group to reduce costs going into a near future sale. That's all I can assume. No way is this an even trade in any stretch of the imagination.

Is there a no blowing Nieuwendyk clause in the NHL, because if so Shero circumvented it. This deal is so shitty that the league should look into it. Even Joe admitted Goli is a "legit 2nd liner". Well, then what's Neal if he's less than that? A 3rd liner?? I think most people would argue Neal is a top liner. Soooo, with that in mind, if you want a 2nd pairing d-man, it's gonna cost you a top line forward PLUS a young replacement defensemen. Because I hate the Pens so much, I say fuck Nieuwendyk, and the fucking loser ass choke master stars. I hope their fans take a giant shit on the hood of his Jaguar. He's making DR look legit. I mean ffs, why didn't we offer them Leopold and a pick for Niskanen and Neal???????????? They couldn't have refused. I'm sure 90% of GM's would have offered more than what the Pens gave, and that's why I feel something is shady. Sorry for the wall of text, but I'm riled up in case you didn't notice.

Edit: as for this cost cutting theory, Neal was on the cheap for this year and next for 2.9. There's NO WAY you replace him at 150% that price.

...and is Brad Richards that big a douche he'd want to ruin his team to make sure he makes a fortune. If that's the player's philosophy, then you cut him the fuck lose. Again, fuck Nieuwendyk. If I was the owner(s), I'd have vetoed that quicker than you can shit on a car's hood.

Well Penguin haters, one thing that should cheer you up is Jordan Staal. Other than the big frame and keen positioning, he's rather ordinary. They could be paying Toews a mere 2.3 more right now.

Toews has 246 points in 280 games, is good defensively, and he plays wing and center.

Staal has 182 points in 349 games, is great defensively, but he refuses to play or can't figure out wing.

So while they are going to be good for a loooonnnngggg time, they still wont have a dynasty. They probably would have won 2 more Cups if they picked Toews over Staal.

But damn, this is Shero's 2nd huge steal of a trade in his young career. The first one was getting Kunitz and Tangradi for Whitney. Although Tangradi is looking like a bust, Whitney remains THE WORST defensive player in the game of hockey at any level including ages 5 and under. I guess tearing up the OHL doesn't mean much to the NHL, in Tangradi's case. And he's from Philly, so he's probably got to take birth control pills and stuff.

I don't think it's that one-sided. Goligoski is a very good offensive d-man, much better than Niskanen who's making only 300k less. All players are under contract until the summer of 2012, so nobody gets to have these players long term.

This was a straight salary dump by Dallas, that's all.

Niskanen $1.5M
Neal $2.875

Goligoski $1.833

They didn't need the cap space, but they're going to need it if they want a good run at Richards in free agency. If they lose out on him, they'll have a metric ass ton of money to spend on a replacement.

Well that and Neal would have gotten a huge raise (estimating around 5.5M) and with the raises coming to Benn and Blindenbacher in the next few years, would have been tough to keep Neal and get any real value for him once they were up against the cap.

Without Myers help, this trade doesn't happen.

Quote:
Neal, a Dallas second-round draft pick in 2005, carries a salary cap hit of $2,875,000, Niskanen $1.5 million. Goligoski's is $1,833,333. Shero noted that he would not have been able to swing this deal if not for the fact that roughly $8 million in cap space opened when center Evgeni Malkin went on long-term injured reserve and had season-ending knee surgery.

"This might have been the year we didn't do anything," Shero said. "Hopefully, a good came out of a bad."

Squanto, Richards is going to cost 7+ million unless they do a Kovalchuk type deal. Considering the fact that they are already paying him 7.8 in cap space, why on earth would they need to dump another 2.5 to make that happen? I thought the same as you until I looked and saw how much he already makes. He's not going to get a big raise, in fact, more likely he will take less per year for longer terms.

From what the Pittsburgh papers are saying it was originally Neal for Gogo straight up, which to me is still a steal for the Penguins but it makes sense. But then Shero swindled the other D-man who might turn out to be better than Gogo is. LOL

This was just a bad hockey trade for the Stars and a great one for the Pens.

They already had over 5 million in cap space, so even if Neal got a 3 million dollar raise they could have easily resigned him after resigning Bradley.

Ok, 5M in cap space with Neal, he gets 3M, now you have 2M to sign Benn and Blidenbacher, both of which will command atleast 3M dollar salaries, now they're up against the cap...mathematics, it's an amazing thing...

Not all about this year, especially when you're out of the playoffs, and potentially losing your best player.

Not to mention several other guys under deals over the next few years, and them potentially getting a top 5 pick, and a player who is going to command atleast Seguin money out of the next two drafts
