I'm curious as to what was meant, specifically, by doing "the little things"? What are the little things that Buffalo doesn't have/do that some of the more desirable organizations do? I don't want to hear about what players or coaches or GM we might have. I want to know things like...is the toilet paper too rough? Are the towels cheap? Has the carpet not been replaced in 5 years?

It's stupid, I know. But my curiousity has been roused. :shifty:

The "little things" is the statement made by Rob Ray in the Sabres drinking game where you must down your drink.

Hah. Very funny. :D

But seriously. I've never been on the locker room (or the HSBC for that matter). What do the Penguins players get that our guys don't? Is it the relocation help? What??

It most likely boils down to treating the players (and their families) like family, not like employees. Small things that they might not have even known they were missing until they got them.

I'm not sure how anyone on this forum would know about things like that...

Well Ray Shero started doing some things for the Penguins that they never used to do. The fathers road trip, better intell via scouting and video. Luxuries around the rink, better travel accommodations, there's tons of things that could be looked at.

Just making players feel good, making players WANT to come to Buffalo not just for the money, but also because they know they'll be treated right. Catering to their needs, providing them luxuries in the locker room, stuff like that.

during the red wings/wild game sunday, they were talking about how ken holland flew bertuzzis whole family out and put them up so they could watch bertuzzis 1000th game. my assumption is stuff like that.

Pretty much what everyone has said already. At the end, those little things are what make players love playing for a certain team/city, and it's what makes em stay. I think as fans, we have done our part showing our support for the team, but the organization needs to do the same as well.

One little thing that I think is a BIG thing is pre-training camp team bonding. You know how teams go to army training centers before training camp? I love shit like that, as a fan I insist on it. It's fucking HUGE.

Stuff like the dinner Pegula is throwing for the entire team and their families is a start.

I think he just wants to build a good rapport around the league, to show that he treats his employees and their families well, and cares about them. Not sure what that would entail specifically, because I'm not a professional athlete nor am I married to one (sah sad), but I'm sure just knowing that the team owner is willing to go above and beyond for yourself and your family gives good piece of mind for the players.

I also heard they're updating the locker room.

Also from the 24/7 show the family skate on the afternoon of game days.... again, not sure if other teams do that, but its kinda cool....

Wow, that was an awesome entrance of our new owner. We had the privilege of meeting Terry Pegula shortly before his press conference in our locker room. Before that all we knew was what was in the media. We knew that he was a big fan of the Sabres and a really knowledgeable hockey person. He confirmed this first impression when he talked to us. Everybody immediately could feel that he loves hockey more than everything else.

He really is the best thing that could have happened to the club and the fans, you simply can’t put it any other way. He’s got some grand plans, but at the same time he’s very down to earth. He believes in what he says and makes a very honest impression. Also, he simply adores his family and it’s important to him that there’s a new and closer family-spirit among the team-members, too. I think it’s great that he’s throwing a big party on Thursday to get to know not only the players and personnel but also their families. I’m sure that the whole team will get even closer now.

It seems that the players are just as excited, if not more, than the fans... Awesome.

There's a whole lot about HSBC arena that could use a good freshening.
It was showing its age when I was there last summer.

I think Tom Brown might have made the new carpeting happen, the Penguins did the same thing back when he was a VP. And that logo on the center of the floor become a big deal to the players, they get pissed when media members or anybody else walks over it. It's a constant reminder of the words 'team" and "pride". That shit might seem silly to some sports fans who think that these millionaires should just do their jobs like machines, but I love that quirky stuff. There's nobility in it.

Quote:
There will quite certainly be a change to our locker room as we’re about to get a new carpet with our logo while we’re on our next lengthy road trip. I really like that. I’ve always wondered why we didn’t have such a carpet before as I already knew that from my time with the Gophers. Back in Minnesota we had a carpet with a big “M” embroidered.

Some dude that is the acting president of the Sabres now and used to be a VP for the Penguins for 9 years, Tim Brown? Oh wait is it Tom Black? Tim Black? LOL I thought it was brown because he's a brown noser. My bad. Good guy though, real positive, never said much when he was here in Pittsburgh at least not in a PR role. In fact yesterday was the 1st time I remember hearing him speak, Sawyer or the GM did all the talking for the Pens during the Tank Days.

I think he does a pretty good Ray Shero impersonation.
