The specs are almost too much of what I need, like I would never seek a laptop out to have specs like this. I just thought the deal was really good, especially since it is another $100 off.

I use a MacBook (white, July 2008) and that has a 13.3 inch screen and I'm completely fine with that. I'm just concerned that 11.6 may be bordering on too small. I do have an old 17 inch monitor just collecting dust, so I suppose that if it were that much an annoyance at home, I could just use that. I also have my TV I could always hook it up to. I just don't want to hate it only because of the screen size.

I found a nice Dell Studio that had a 17 inch monitor, but I just think that is absolutely huge. Even if I did want to transport it, it would be way too heavy for me. It was cheaper than this Alienware, but it had pretty decent stats. The $100 off coupon works on it as well.

I just can't seem to find a nice happy medium. :(

I have an HP Pavilion DV7. It is great for all of the building i do for Ubuntu, as well as being a code writer for space weather models. Since I have a desktop at home that acts as a server for all of my needs (building code, sharing music, hosting blogs/websites). I don't really need a laptop that has all of this power. So what type of laptop you want depends on what you'll be doing on it.

I'm in the market for a lightweight 12" laptop, with high battery life that I can take around (of course on Ubuntu) and do whatever I need on whatever machine I need to **<3 SSH**.
This would be:
~2GB RAM
high battery life
cheap SATA
NVIDIA graphics card (i hope)

I'm just getting tired of carrying my 7LB laptop around when I can get one for 1/3 of that weight.

I'm with this guy all the way. I have the model just before DV7, and it's awesome. I LOVE the big screen, and 7 lbs is nothing if you have it in a case(unless you're traversing Mongolia). Here's a big tip to save you cash(and this is how I got mine). Find one of Craigslist, but first make sure you do this. Call HP, and give them the serial and model numbers of the laptop the seller has. They will let you know if you can buy the extended warranty for a year for $150(chances are you will be able to). Then run the memory and hd tests on the laptop before you pay the guy. If they pass, HP will warranty it. I got my $1000 laptop for $300 plus the $150 this way. The DVD drive wasn't showing up, so I sent it in. They replaced it, the mainboard, and keyboard, etc(like $600 worth of work) in less than a week. I now have a practically brand new top of the line laptop for $450. I pretty sure they'll let me continue to re-up on the warranty, and they even offer one that allows you to drop the damn thing.

I was expecting a lot of HP hate coming into this thread, but did not really see anything.

As others have said, i'd go HP. I have been through all the companies and HP/Compaq seem to be the strongest when it comes to reliability and service.

My hp laptop is 2 years old now and I LOVE it.

As someone said before though, many of the companies are going to have similar parts.

I'd go HP.

I decided on another Toshiba for my new laptop, a Satellite Pro L630 series. 13.3" screen, 4GB of RAM, 320GB HDD (5,400RPM), Windows 7 Pro, integrated webcam, multitouch touchpad (like the screen on an Android or iOS device).

It was that or a System76 Lemur UltraThin and while I was keen on going back to Ubuntu, it only has half the RAM and a 250GB HDD as compared to the L630.

I'm not sure what laptop I'm going to get when I get another one. All I know is, I'm gonna get excellent deals from the distributors.

I was looking at Sony deals on TV's and holy crap, I can't wait, so I may go towards a Sony Laptop.

My Toshiba has been solid for me. Mine is a Toshiba Satellite, but there's a bunch of different kinds I believe. I know for the most part though, Toshibas are reliable and last a decent amount of time.

Yea, I love Toshiba. I'm pretty brand loyal, so I'll be looking to pick up a couple of other Toshiba products in the future.
