Agreed Tom. If he wanted a trade to maybe go place elsewhere and Regier didn't think anyone would even trade for him, waiving him and then putting him on re-entry waivers is the best bet. I had hoped he would accept assignment to Portland to be a great mentor to the kids on their Calder Cup run, but I think he has way too much pride to do that.

Who knows maybe a Portland assignment would actually help his play out a little bit. Almost like a conditioning stint except for the ability for him to maybe go to another team

They could have sent him down on a conditioning assignment without exposing him to waivers.

These moves are entirely to give him a chance to play somewhere else. He's played his last game in a Sabres sweater.

The NHL is the big show. Can't say I blame him for wanting to stay in it in some capacity.

So will he be placed on re-entry today, or is there a rule against that? How long will we have to wait?

And what if he doesn't get claimed on re-entry? He gets waived again, in which he'll clear again. Then what? Buyout, which means he doesn't play at all, or assignment, in which case he instantly becomes a leader.

I _think_ that since he's cleared waivers once he wouldn't have to clear again to be bought out, assuming he doesn't get claimed on re-entry.

I'll have to look it up though.

Audio of Rivet's comments after practice and before he found out he was placed on re-entry. Darcy's are there as well.

Ya know, he could have bitched out the team big time, pissed and moaned but I think he's handled this whole situation better than anyone could have imagined. Maybe he gets claimed by one of the teams he's played for in the past? (Habs/Sharks)

Teams will have until noon on Saturday to claim him off of re-entry waivers. Someone might take a chance on him solely because being on re-entry waivers reduces his salary.

I really hope someone picks him up. He is a class-act kind of guy. Good dude.

Everyones favorite rumor dork says the Sharks will grab him off re-entry.

The waivers process is just so confusing.

It's not that confusing when laid out properly and all on one page.

The waiver process isn't confusing at all.

Just spoke with Craig Rivet. Feels good about the chances of a team taking him on re-entry waivers. Classy guy and hope for the best for him

I guess I was wrong then, thanks for clearing that up.

Check it...

Player is waived. If he's claimed, the claiming team takes on his entire remaining salary and cap hit. If more than one team puts a claim in, the team with the worst record gets him. If he clears, he can be assigned to that team's AHL affiliate or just stay put and do nothing.

Player is put on re-entry waivers. If he's claimed, the claiming team takes on half of his remaining salary and cap hit and his original team takes on the other half. If he's claimed by more than one team, again, the team with the worst record gets him. If he clears, he's back with the NHL team.

I gotta lay down, my brain hurts after that.

I have a method of explaining this that I know will help everyone.

First, replace the word waiver with waver.

Now imagine that the team is a single mother of 20+ children. Some of these children are good, some of them leech off of her well into their 30's.

When a child has over stayed his welcome, the mother must wave goodbye, therefore the team becomes the "waver".

Are you with me so far? :)

The mother drives the child to the outskirts of a bad neighborhood and tells him to walk through to the other side, she hands him a lunch box (his salary), promises to meet him on the other side with a treat, and waves goodbye. The child will be looked over and teased by up too 29 bullies who may forcibly recruit him into one of their gangs, and inherit the entire contents of the lunch box. If the child sneaks past the bullies, to the other side, he will grow hungry and eat half of his lunch while waiting for his mom to show up. Eventually realizing the ruse, he will attempt to make it back through the bad neighborhood, humiliated and alone. Once again he must sneak past up too 29 bullies, and if he is caught and recruited, they will again inherit the contents of his lunchbox (only half now). If he makes it back to the other side he will find a mean old nanny (the AHL), if he refuses to go with her he will be forced to walk alone until he dies of starvation.

I know how that works. I was making a general statement about how waivers can be confusing when it comes to specific circumstances. Such as the whole Nabokov situation, when a team can and can't call up/send down a player, or which players are exempt due to age or games played. It can be confusing to keep track of everything for every circumstance. I never saw that link that Aaron posted, but that's certainly helpful, but it can still be confusing when trying to recall everything from memory.

It all depends on when a player signs an ELC or how many games they played from their first signing. Tyler Ennis is still exempt from Waivers, Gerbe is still exempt from Waivers, Myers is still exempt from Waivers, Butler and Sekera might still be also, not sure how many games each have played.

Those are our players that would be exempt, this is without me checking so don't quote me on the last two guys, reason I said might.
