he could, but also check out the ski boots. those aint letting his feet rotate in any way. i dunno, certainly dangerous, but i think its a LITTLE overhyped. kinda like travis pastrana jumping water a few new years eves ago.

though if he falls forward, game over.

But I don't mind the rotating thing...but its getting a bit tiresome

I think I know who our next captain is:

Quote:
“I just think it’s time for Thomas to be that leader, be recognized. It’s the point of his career where he’s our leading scorer and you hear his voice in the room now, and I think it’s important that some of the leadership falls on his shoulders,” Ruff said of his decision to name Vanek an alternate captain.

I wouldn't have pegged Vanek as a captain, I always thought that he already had enough riding on his shoulders and didn't need the added pressure, plus he seems to be really hard on himself when he's not succeeding and it shows. But obviously Lindy and the players know way more about what kind of leader Vanek can be than I do, so if he ends up being our next capitain I'll support that fully.

Terry Pegula also said in his executive board meeting with The Buffalo News that when he talked to the players in the locker room, he could immediately tell that Gaustad was a good leader, which I thought was interesting.

Vanek absolutely should at least have an A. Hecht isn't a leader on the ice from where I'm sitting, so if he's got hurt feelings then he should download some Flight of the Concords and have a cold one. The other A's should go to Montador and Leopold.

I don't like players that haven't spent a majority of their career in Buffalo getting a letter.

You are just have butthurt from the whole Rivet fiasco.

At least Monty has spent almost a good two years with the team.

I really think that the more responsibility you place on Vanek the better he becomes. Look at him this year, after Roy went out, it was all on him to be a star, and he really stepped it up the second half of the year. I think he's a guy who could be a lead by example, and he's probably going to give even more with a letter on his chest.

Then you clearly wouldn't like Pat LaFontaine, who received the C after only one season here.

I think if you hold yourself to retardedly high standards on and off the ice that should speak wonders for the rest of the team. In Vanek's case, he is very hard on himself but if he constantly strives to be the best, that has to be contagious and should earn him to have, like X-pens said, at least an "A". Not sure about the "C" for him yet. I'll also add that although it was preseason, the team seemed to play very well with Pommer wearing the "C", but who knows who will be designated what letters.

I also think with how Goose carries himself on the ice, you can tell he has a voice in the locker room and has no qualms with speaking up when it's needed or lighting a fire under the other guys.

Everything about Goose screams captain....except his skill level and 3rd/4th line placement.

I think the only valid option is Vanek, who I hope rises to the challenge. (whom? fuck I never know when to use who/whom)

Goose is a role player - a 4th liner who's good in faceoffs (when he doesn't get tossed) and logs average ice time at best. Shouldn't the captain should be one of your ice time leaders and best players. Of course Rivet broke the captain mold too, so who the hell knows...

If Vanek gets a C I believe that he will rise to the challenge easily. I think it would actually excel his career even more.

Bad sentence. Like the players themselves fine, don't like that situation. It makes more sense to me to have a guy that has come up through the organization wearing the most important letter. Just seems to give the letter more strength when the other guys know that they've been there, that they're a key piece of the organization.

OK, I'm gonna post the captains that have won a Stanley Cup since the 1999-2000 season.

2000: Scott Stevens (New Jersey Devils)- Guy was one of the best New Jersey defenseman of all time.
2001: Joe Sakic (Colorado Avalanche)- Over a point-per-game player, captain from 1995-2009 (probably earlier with Quebec), won two cups.
2002: Steve Yzerman (Detroit Red Wings)- Arguably the 2nd best, if not the best, Red Wing of all time. Led his team to three cups. Another point producer.
2003: Scott Stevens (New Jersey Devils)- See above
2004: Dave Andreychuk (Tampa Bay Lightning)- A guy who by this time was getting old, Andreychuk had the veteran leadership, a guy who had been there, done that.
2005: No cup
2006: Rod Brind'Amour (Carolina Hurricanes)- Point-producer, nuisance on the ice. Another been there, done that guy who was enjoying a resurgence after the lockout.
2007: Scott Niedermayer (Anaheim Ducks)- High-scoring defensman, and a been there, done that guy.
2008: Nicholas Lidstrom (Detroit Red Wings)- High-scoring defensman, who even at age 40, still racks up points and could win another Norris Trophy (seven?)
2009: Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins)- Point-producer, youngest captain to win, crybaby, etc.
2010: Johnathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks)- Point-producer, 2nd youngest captain to win (I think), a lead by example type.

What does this tell us? Other than maybe Andreychuk, none of these guys were 3rd or 4th line role players. By this, it shows me guys that score on the ice are the guys leading the team.

Because of this, I want no part of Gaustad being my team's captain. Don't get me wrong, I like Gaustad, but my theory is this. If your captain can't score you big goals when you need him to, how is the team going to follow his example and try to the same? You have to find the best combination of hard work and talent, and I think Vanek gives you the greatest combination of both. He's got not only the talent and the hard work, but he also has the clutchness factor. I'm pretty positive that no one on this team has more game winning goals than Vanek since the lockout. To me, with all this information in front of me, it's an easy decision.

So is the C...the Sabres have the same problem a few teams have with their chest letters.
