Highlights:

Prices were higher than usual

Not a lot of activity

Players could have been sold for draft picks; but doing so is an admission you dont think your team can make playoffs

Not a lot of players in the market place

Talked to teams about aquiring bigger named players, longer term. Had serious conversations, but didn't go through. We will make more attempts at the draft, and hopefully get a deal done.

This is a new ownership group, opened to spending money, and gives us the ability to go into areas we haven't been into before.

Pegula is involved with the front office guys. Provokes thoughts and Ideas.

No consideration to trading Roy at the deadline this year.

This is not the usual Darcy bullshit. This is him being straight forward, and embracing his new role. He tried to get bigger name players, but didn't want to pay the LA price. Which is fair.

The LA price was a bit too expensive. Translated into Buffalo terms it would have been, Kassian + 1st + 3rd for Penner. While I still think Penner is a great player, and would have been good here, thats way too much.

What other players he was talking about, I do not know, and dont want anybody getting butt hurt for me mentioning names, because I dont have a "reliable" source.

Overall I think we tried to get a lot and make a serious run this year. We just weren't willing to pay what I like to call, "The Glenn Sather Premium" where you over pay, hurt your teams future, and really roll the dice on big name guys. (Drury, Redden, Frolov, etc)

I think we are going to continue to make positive moves, and acquire some really good players. Darcy seems to be capable of making deals, but wont put our team in a situation to fail long term. I'd much rather compete for a cup in 2 years for the next 10, rather than be Chicago who won it one year, and this year is struggling because they can't afford to put a team around 2 or 3 big time players.

This was a very good interview, and it leaves me feeling much more positive about the future of this team, and I still feel pretty good about what we could do in this years playoffs. Miller gets hot, Vanek gets hot, and who knows how far we can go.

I am very happy with the move he did make and it isn't like there were a ton of GMs and big names moving out there... the market was simply over priced...

Wonder why it would be lower at the draft? Less "buyers"? More teams retooling for the future? Cap issues?

Any way, I am happy to see an unchained Darcy and look forward to seeing what he can build! And I think he made a very positive move yesterday...

thanks for the read...

I hear you, I have zero problems with an owner wanting to learn the hockey operations side of the business. In fact, I think it's very commendable, as a fan he's probably fascinated by the whole process of making a hockey trade to say nothing of his financial interests.

Make no mistake, many Sabre's fans are polishing their tin foil hats as we type this.

he didn't say big-name players, he said "bigger" players. size-wise, i think. if i remember right he followed up by talking about lack of grit.

He specified bigger long-term players. I think we prefer bigger sized, bigger production players staying here long term, specifically several years.

I hope Darcy Regier made a smart move. Making smart moves is essential to win Stanley Cups.

I think Darcy was calling Jersey about Parise, even though he's going to be an unrestricted free agent.

I mean, if I had to guess, I'd say he was kicking the tires on guys like Doan, Morrow, Nick Shultz, etc. Seems to be the type of players we've been trying to add through the draft. Big, tough, physical guys with some scoring touch, and excellent defensive responsibilities.

I also think that we did infact go after John-Michael Liles, but the price just wasn't right. Rumors I read (can't find link, relax guys) said the asking price for JM Liles was 1st, and roster player who plays 2nd line or better. Probably would have cost us Stafford and 1st. Which really isn't worth it to me. Especially with Roy being hurt, this summer, it could make more sense, depending on the progression that players like Adam, Ennis, Kassian, etc make.

Would you think the price on JML goes up, down or stays the same in the off season... I just think it would be cool to have Miller's BFF on the back end... and helpful to have a decent puck moving d man.... even though Sekera is getting there... still some bone head with some brilliance... but he's young and working it out...

Edit - curious what your pairings would look like with JML? Do you keep Monte? Do you send Sekera for JML?

Myers - JML
ShaMo - Weber
Leopold - Monte
Butler

I think I like this idea... he is a RFA... with a current cap hit of about $3 mill... what would it take to pry him out of NJ...

goes down probably. 1 year left on his deal after this season, and then he is UFA to be. I'd assume he could be had next year for a solid prospect, and a 2nd rounder

A ridiculous long term contract at the end of the year since the Devils don't have the cap space to probably resign him to what he is asking.

would darcy do that? wasn't he pretty pissed when someone did it to him? wouldn't the Devils tender him fairly high, I dont want to give up 4 firsts for the guy... wouldn't it be better to trade for him and extend him? as opposed to giving up what will i am sure be a high RFA tender?
