My thoughts are that you need to chill on Boyes.

2 goals, 2 assists in 3 games and he back checks and has given some pretty good hits along the boards.

I doubt he'll stay at this pace as that is a pretty near impossible task to ask of him, but fro playing 3 games in a new system...he's doing pretty well.

Okay, Im gonna say this one last time. He is a great player and the only thing that I don't like is his BREAKOUT. I've said this in at least 4 other posts.

Actually, I've only seen good things from his break out.

I'm confused by what you mean by his "breakout" exactly...he's not a defenseman, and his positioning has been pretty sound.

If you're going to harp on Boyes, I can think of 3 or 4 other players whose "breakout" could use some work too. This dude is brand new to the organization.

Just because you're not a defenseman doesn't mean that you don't breakout too. Everyone on the ice has to breakout. And yes, he is brand new to the organization, and I was kinda expecting some better breakout passes from him. Why was I harping on Boyes and not other players like Pominville, Stafford, Niedermeyer or Gerbe? Because I kinda already know that they really aren't the best defensively and I already know what they can and can't do.

It's going to take Boyes some time to learn the tendencies of the Sabres' system. In my opinion, the breakout is a somewhat weak point of Lindy's system as it is. This team has struggled with it mightily at times this season.

It's no surprise to me that Boyes hasn't jumped right in here and performed it to perfection.

But since he's not a defensemen, he doesn't "breakout" a lot, and I've seen nothing but a good "breakout" from him. I saw a decent play where he helped out Monty when he failed at "breakout". I'm putting "breakout" in quotation because that's a shitty way of saying CARRYING IT OUT OF THE ZONE.

Nah. There's a lot more to the breakout than just carrying the puck out of the zone. Teams have multiple plays they go to on the breakout, tons of passes based on where they regain control of the puck, the positioning of the opposition... there's a TON more to the break out than just carrying it out of the zone.

As a wing, it shouldn't affect him that much, because they're usually the last players to handle the puck on the breakout. Occasionally, however, they are forced to dip down to the circles and make the final pass to another player streaking out of the zone. This happens when you play a team that likes their defensemen to pinch a lot.

As a center, you've got to be in good position to receive a pass from your defensemen, then either turn and play it up to your wings, or shield and dish it off to the side walls back to one of your defensemen.

Skating the puck out of your own zone doesn't happen unless the other team is changing players, or you're on the power play.

Sabres1996 is referring to Boyes' pass selection.

I haven't noticed whether it's been good or bad. I've missed a few of the games he's played since he was traded here.

But like I said, the breakout hasn't been a strong point of the Sabres' system so far this season, and Boyes won't just pick up on it right away because every team does it differently.

Boyes was brought in here to provide offense. He's done it so far. I'm not sure why we needed 4 pages to complain about a fairly minor part of the game.

Well according to you, defense is a very important part of the game.

Don't worry about it, 1996. I get what you're saying, but I think he'll improve in that department the more he plays here.

It is.

To be good on offense, you first need to play sound defense, simple as that. You can't keep the puck out of the net, how are you going to be able to score into the opponents?

i don't think that's right. to be a good team you have to be at least good on both ends, but you can have a bad defense and a great offense and win games.

Boyes made pretty decent passes out of the zone, helped his teammates out, and played a physical defensive game.

That's what I saw, at least.
