Shocked people from Buffalo are hating on him. He's typically the type of player fans love, the underdog, semi-underachieving type player. Although his name isn't Kassian or Kennedy, so somebody is always going to hitch about it. Buffalo has good fans, but some really retarded ones as well.

who loves an underachiever?

people love underdogs that overachieve.

I'd assume that's what he meant.

PITTSBURGH -- Thomas Vanek will not play tonight, Lindy Ruff said after today's morning skate. Vanek, Buffalo's leading scorer (23-32-55), is the player who came down with the flu after Sunday's win in Minnesota.
"Thomas has got the flu pretty bad," Ruff said. "He hasn't left the hotel yet. No chance."

Well. Today game has 0 star players in it. Minus Miller I guess...should be a low scoring affair, lol.

And to follow up to PatGreens post, we love guys who aren't supposed to make it and do, then under achieve. Gerbe, Kennedy, Ellis, Kaleta (let the shit storm begin), etc guys who show potential, but never really impact the game. Example being Kaleta supposed to be the next Matt Barnaby, couldn't even lace Barnabys skates, Gerbe being an Adam Oates type player, bust. Kennedy supposed to be a Stu Barns, bust. Ellis can't score more than 15 points in a season, bust. Everyone loves those guys though.

Ok, one position player that's a star. Still, most of the offensive firepower out for tonight. Good old fashion slobberknocker type game though. I fully expect 3 or 4 fights.

Regardless of position he's a star. He's the most talked about Sabre besides Ryan Miller and he's about on the level of Thomas Vanek. Yes, offensive depth is bleh for this team tonight, but to say there aren't any stars playing is ridiculous. And to suggest the Pens don't have any stars in the lineup is even more ridiculous.

i think people romanticize barnaby sometimes.

Fair enough. I'm really biased toward Barnaby because he was my favorite player growing up. So its really not an argument I can go at objectively.

i was in your boat- i thought he was the man, but seeing some of the classic games, other than the memorable barnabyisms, i don't think he is that much better than kaleta.

in fairness, i think its sabre fans that did it with these players. you look at scouting reports and such, and none of these players were rated very highly. but teams fans tend to over-value their own prospects.

as far as barnaby goes, he could and did score.

i really wish they had his goal against philly in the 98 post season on youtube.

all i can find is a short clip in NHL 99s intro.

well when scouts say "adam oates type player" a lot of people think they're getting adam oates (my dad partied with him in college by the way). when really, they're probably getting a player that might have his style but no where near his potential. like afinogenov played like bure...just wasn't good at it.

i tend to go with hockeys future when i look at younger players potential. of course no one can predict the future with 100% accuracy, but they seem to know their stuff.

So we have a real patchwork line-up tonight, no advantage over the Pens without Crosby and Malkin.

I still think the Sabres have more talent on the ice tonight.
