The footage of homes, buildings, cars, and large boats being swept away is unbelievable.

Tsunami warnings have been issues in Japan, Russia, South America, Hawaii, and the west coast of the US.

One of my friends grew up there. I hope everyone he knows is safe. Right now the death toll is only at 60, but it's been a little while; I'm not expecting it to get above a few hundred. At least this won't be like the Christmas 2004 tsunami, with preliminary reports stating 50 died before settling on 250,000+.

On another note: that's a strong earthquake.

I'm going to go ahead and NOT drive to my office 2 blocks from the beach in Santa Monica.
I hear they're expecting 6-7 foot tsunami waves around 8:30 PST

That's an understatement....that's a friggin MASSIVE earthquake.
8+ magnitude anywhere you could easily characterize as "the big one".

The first tsunami waves have started hitting the California coast.
My area should get them in about 30 minutes.

How far from the coast are you? Will the water reach you?

Well I didn;t go to the office this morning so there's a mountain range between me and the coast right now.
Usually I'd be about 500 yards from the water although Santa Monica has about a 100 Ft. cliff protecting the city from the water, once you start going south into Venice, Marina Del Rey and El Segundo, there's no such protection.

I've put in that request to a couple of my coworkers...If I get any, I'll post them.

When my family heard (since they have no concept of how far Colorado is from the Ocean) they asked if we'd be okay. I was like...you mean aside from the fact that we're a mile above sea level and nowhere near the coast?

I've been listening to reports from the Oregon coast on my way to work, sounds like nothing major is happening or will happen.

no...that's the normal water line...the waves had almost no impact in Santa Monica bay...although I hear it was more dramatic further south.

Seeing ships turned on its side because of the quake gives me the chills.

Apparently Hawaii is also getting hit pretty hard. Such scary stuff. It is really devastating. People can complain about the snow here all they want, but if that's as bad as we get it here, I'd say we should be pretty thankful.
