Joe Thornton Criticizes NHL for Not Suspending Zdeno Chara, Says League Rules in Bruins Favor
by Elizabeth Cohen on Fri, Mar 11, 2011 at 2:22AM

Joe Thornton is not unfamiliar with controversy in Boston, and he decided to whip up some more during an interview on Thursday while discussing his former team.
When asked about the recent debate over Zdeno Chara's hit on Montreal's Max Pacioretty, Thornton said he believes that Boston gets away with more favorable rulings from the league, the Globe and Mail reports.
"It's just something with Boston," Thornton said. "It just seems like they have a horseshoe. We've seen the [Milan] Lucic cross-check to the head [of Dominic Moore] earlier, and there's no disciplinary thing."
Thorton went on to question the NHL's process of disciplining players for certain hits on the ice, and said Boston always seems to have an edge when it comes to avoiding further penalty from the league.
"It's just something about Boston and the disciplinary [process] is on their side," Thornton added. "I'm not sure why that is. I'm not assuming that Colin's [Campbell] kid is on the team and that's why, but it's really bizarre."
Thornton may have a point, or he may just be spouting sour grapes over his two-game suspension earlier in the season for his blindside hit on St. Louis winger David Perron -- who has been sitting out indefinitely with a concussion since the incident.

I also read that Campbell did not govern over the incidents review or decision, but it is very alarming how they never get suspended while other players get games for being accused of less. Really weird...

Campbell doesn't hand out discipline for Boston so no one can say that it's because of his son buuuuut doesn't mean he has no influence. Lucic has crossed checked others in the head before, that hit on Moore should have been a suspension

and this isn't the first time Chara should have been suspended...

If only this sport had good leadership.

Colin Campbell is allowed to rule on situations in Boston, it's situations surrounding his son specifically he doesn't handle.

Frankly, it's highly disturbing to me that the NHL decided to take ZERO action against Chara. While I don't believe it was intentional, it was still a very dangerous play and Chara should have gotten at least a game suspension...if only to send a message to the players that reckless plays such as that are not condoned.

It was stated in articles that Mike Murphy handled this review because Campbells son being on the Bruins could lead people to believe that he is favoring the team

Okay this is the first time I have posted anything about the hit so bare with me if I have repeated things here. Chara did nothing wrong at all on the play, yes it was interference but that is it. I hope Max P is okay but really he kind of had it coming to for acting like a fucking douche the prior 2 games they played the Bruins.

Are you kidding me? So he deserves to have his neck broken because he's a bit of pest and got under the skin of some guy who takes liberties with much smaller players all the time? NO ONE deserves to be hurt like that.

Did I fucking say that he deserves a broken neck?? No I didnt. I said something like this was bound to happen to him. Learn how to read.

Chara is ultimately responsible for the fractured vertebrae of Max P. He should be at least suspended. In no other sport can a guy push another guy into boards or something and fracture his vertebrae, then NOT get suspended.

By saying that 'he kind of had it coming to him' you implied that he deserves to have a broken neck. Learn how the English language works.

Ignore him, he spews out nonsense most of the time about hockey.

relax people.

the NHL was in a tough spot. they could either:

A. suspend him based on the result of the play, rather then the infraction itself, or...

B. not suspend based on the nature of the play, which was deemed not dirty, and "ignore" the injury in the ruling.

the NHL chose B... and i understand why there is no grey area for two games. however, im not sure i agree with the NHL this time.

It was interference, which led to an injury of a high order, and you don't know what Chara intended. 2 games sounds acceptable, but no suspension is fucking stupid.

Recchi: Habs 'embellished' injury

BOSTON
The 22-year-old Habs forward suffered a fractured vertebra and severe concussion March 8 after being pushed headfirst into the boards by the Bruins captain.

Chara was handed a five-minute major penalty for interference and a game misconduct for the hit.

But he escaped both a fine and suspension from the NHL over the incident, despite widespread calls for punishment, with even Air Canada and the Canadian prime minister urging firm retribution.

Speaking ahead of the return game in Boston, Recchi told local radio station WBZ that while he hoped Pacioretty was well, it was clear to him that the Habs stretched the truth of his concussion in order to see Chara condemned.

"I believe, yeah, they were trying to get Zdeno suspended, and they embellished it a little bit," the Bruins veteran said Wednesday. "You have to look at it -- I guess they were trying to do whatever they could to get him suspended. And I think the league sent the message that it was a hockey play, and that's the important thing that people have to understand."

Recchi added, "(Pacioretty) does obviously have a fractured vertebra, but the concussion was obviously really a non-factor, maybe a day or two. Maybe a day he felt it, then he was fine a couple of days later."

Montreal played the most depressing "response" game I've ever seen last night.

I hate Mark Rechhi. What an asshole. I hate all those players, all their coaches, their general manager, their ice crew, their families, their fans, their minor league affiliate. Well, you get the point, I fucking hate the Boston Bruins.
