Actually, you responded to my response to Yhoshi, so don't flatter yourself. The fact that you think calling someone a troll makes you awesome is hilarious.

I'm not very good at reading the tone of a conversation, but it seems like the last few posts have been joking...not really well received, at least by me, and probably a few other board members. Have some class, guys.

What happened in Japan is very tragic.

But, this thread devoted to the disaster was getting a little out of hand, thanks to my douchiness, so a little comedy should add some comic relief.

The best way to handle when you've been a douche is to apologize.

The Japanese PM has announced at least one reactor is leaking radiation...telling people within 20 miles to stay indoors.

"The level seems very high, and there is still a very high risk of more radiation coming out,"

I watched the interview with the guy who designed one of the plants, and I mean he had THREE really smart prevention systems in place and they all failed. He said he thinks that the container that houses the rods is leaking, and the prevention systems can't keep pace with the leak. So there is no way to cool them off.

The situation has grown from grave to total shit storm.

I guess we need 4 or 5 contingency plans for now on. After all those poor people die of radiation poisoning that is. :(

they are saying there is little potential for cancer to people from the levels of radiation that are escaping.

well yeah, the way that 1 guy articulately put it, the levels wont be harmful when dispersed over such a distance. but what scares the shit out of me is that they dont want to cause further panic to the people, when I hear shit like that I feel like those people are trapped because the resources arent there to take precautionary measures due to other excruciating circumstances. but they also said that the core wasnt damaged like the other ones, and it was used coils that were lit. So, it seems logical to think that that particular plant wont get any worse once the fires contained assuming it isnt already.

that other plant is a time bomb, they need to get everybody the fuck out of there. I got room in my house for a small family until everything is 100%

I hate to think that things like pride are in play here, there's too much at risk

Well, we're still sending robots into 3 mile island...

Hopefully, they can reach some sort of stable situation like that.

This may be my 3 beer diploma in nuclear physics talking, but they're dealing with a 10k-20k year half-life for this stuff...the fact that they're pumping sea water means they've already written the reactors off as ever functioning again (without massive rebuilding) and they're just trying to delay the rods melting before the reaction can be contained in some way.

Add to that the government admitting active leaking and it paints a pretty grim picture.

Well don't confuse the two issues, because as of right now the leak is coming from the incinerated radioactive remains (for lack of a sober word) of plant 4. The other plants are not leaking (yet) but they are having tourble cooling them. So there is a slim ray of light in an otherwise dark tale. I report did say that the reactors are toast, but could be salvaged.

I'm gonna have a 3 ulcer diploma by the time this is all over. I can't help but feel like there is this "We don't need stupid Americans fuckign things up more." vibe

which although it's justified, I would hope that they realize that we and most of the rest of the world just want to help in anyway possible.

All I know is the containment buildings are doing their jobs. Unlike chernobyl since they didn't even have concrete around the reactor.

The media is also ridiculous. Some are trying to put blame on the government which is ridiculous also.

I just hope everything works out. Just as long as the containment buildings do their jobs.

My heart really goes out to the people of Japan. This has been such a horrible catastrophe for them. I sincerely hope that the can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

I also read a really interesting article on the issue that seems to show how prepared Japan really was. It's very informative.

http://www.kalzumeus.com/2011/03/13/som ... arthquake/

As bad as the outcome was, if they weren't so prepared, it could have been a lot worse. Just thought it was a good read that shines a bit of light on such a dark event.
