Hey guys,
Long time reader first time poster so please dont grill me too long and please dont call me a troll or anything. I love the sabres more then anything.

But I was just curious to see peoples over all thoughts on Grier and Niedmayer. I personally have a hard time watching these two play. More then half the time it seems like their feet are not moving and they are not producing any threat on offense at all. Yes I know these two are supposed to be defensive specialists forwards but when they barley move their feet and make it look like pee wee hockey on the break out it makes me wonder if Ruff will just give these guys passes? Is there really no one down in Portland that would not give more to the sabres then these two guys?

these two seem to have lost their effectiveness. its sad, but true. i like both players, but it looks like twilight on their respective careers.

For as much shit that Niedermayer gets for not scoring, he does make some really smart defensive plays and I've seen him save a few "sure" goals this season.

And I love Grier...I have to admit bias because he's one of my favorite players, but I like him. I think he's a great penalty killer and he scored on a breakaway a few weeks ago!!! He's the man.

Do not disrespect the Holy Grier.

Feel free to shit on Niedermayer all you'd like, though.

I like Grier for what he's paid and what he brings.

I don't think we need two Grier's though. And I wouldn't even consider Niedermayer in the Grier category at this point.

I'm not in the locker room, so I can't be sure. Nieds did win a Stanley Cup, and I suppose it's possible that as a veteran he's had some sort of effect on how the Sabres have climbed into playoff position.

But I don't like the odds of that being the truth because I haven't heard much about it.

With Kaleta out, he's got a spot. But when it comes down to 1 forward as a healthy scratch, I think he should be it.

The good thing about Niedermayer: I never see him doing anything wrong. He's solid defensively.

I actually like both guys as useless as they've been this year. Niedermayer is basically doing what he has been the past four years.

06-07 - 5-11-16
07-08 - 8-8-16
08-09 - 14-7-21
09-10 - 10-12-22
10-11 - 2-14-16

I do have a couple of different complaints on each player though. I think some of the failures of the penalty kill this season (17th in the NHL) can be put on Grier's shoulders. I don't think there has been enough upside in Niedermayer's game. I know he's not going to put up a ton of points, but I'd at least like to see him making some contribution whether it's blocking shots, laying hits, forechecking, winning faceoffs, whatever. Just something that makes you say, "Rob Niedermayer is doing alright." 2-14-16, -5, and fewer hits (30) than Nathan Gerbe (35) doesn't do it for me. Hell, Byron has more than half Niedermayer's hits (18) and he's played 1/8th of the games.

Niedermayer is an empty uniform. How he continues to dress each and every night astonishes me.

I have no problem whatsoever with these guys as 4th liners whatsoever. They're not breaking the bank, and are solid on the PK, especially Grier. Grier probably could have at least half a dozen more goals this year if he capitalized on point blank opportunities and breakaways. I like what they would bring should they make the playoffs.

I don't think Grier is as effective as he was last year and Nieds is pretty useless that being said I think both players will be gone next year.

I think I'd rather see Matt Ellis on the team than either one of them honestly.

Matt Ellis just came back from injury. So I think he needs a call-up. I'm a big Ellis fan.

Believe me I jumped for joy when I saw black ice was coming back to buff but I just feel like he lost his magic and his glide routine is starting to bother me, and I feel matt ellis could easily replace both of these guys in a heart beat

What's been killing me about Grier this season is he seems to end up with a majority of break-away chances (for the entire team) on the tape of his stick and he's only been able to finish...what, once?

Drives me up a wall.

Same thing in 2006. He had more than a handful of clean breakaways during their playoff run. He couldn't score on any of them. One goal could potentially have meant a trip to the finals.

I guess the message here is, "Don't use Grier in the shootout!"

In all seriousness though, Nieds is alright defensively but terrible up front. He brings zero intensity to the offensive zone. Or any zone for that matter. Grier...what can I say that already hasn't been said. You're a champ but...it's time to hang 'em up.
